\"\"<\/a>Have you heard of Sarah Jarosz? \u00a0If not, you should check her out. \u00a0She\u2019s part of an interesting develop in modern music. \u00a0Call it \u201cclassical bluegrass.\u201d \u00a0NPR recently did a story on Jarosz and this developing sound<\/a>, suggesting that her brand of performance is the child of a marriage between classical music schools and traditional bluegrass.<\/p>\n

If you like music, this is interesting stuff. \u00a0The NPR piece tells the story:<\/p>\n

The New England Conservatory, the oldest free-standing music school in the U.S., is not a place you\u2019d have been likely to find a bluegrass-trained artist just a few years ago. But, like the artist herself, the school is stretching out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe program I\u2019m in is called Contemporary Improvisation, and it\u2019s kind of the development of your personal style,\u201d\u00a0Sarah Jarosz<\/a>\u00a0says. \u201cLast year, I was in a world music ensemble and a Jewish music ensemble, which is really fun, like klezmer and Yiddish folk music. And as a vocalist, that\u2019s really pushed me to use my voice in a way I\u2019d normally never use my singing voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The piece<\/a> also details the specific influences on her style:<\/p>\n

For her part, Jarosz says there\u2019s no easily drawn line between her studies and the songs on her new album \u2014 titled\u00a0Follow Me Down<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 but that she feels more confident in her singing and versatile in her writing. The folk influences shine through, as she plays her banjo in pre-bluegrass style and channels Edgar Allan Poe.<\/p>\n

Jarosz also composes instrumentals that nod to what some have called \u201cchamber-grass.\u201d She plays octave mandolin with a bass, cello, violin and dobro star\u00a0Jerry Douglas<\/a>, one of her heroes and a pioneer of this hybrid American sound.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019ve listened to Jarosz\u2019s music and found it compelling and fresh. \u00a0You can listen to it for free here<\/a>. \u00a0This is her artist page<\/a>. \u00a0\u201cChamber-grass,\u201d \u201cclassical bluegrass,\u201d or whatever else you call it, it\u2019s worth hearing out. \u00a0Bluegrass features some of the most thoughtful songwriting around, often delving into expressly spiritual themes. \u00a0Jarosz fits this bill; her work is good driving music, thinking music, reading music.<\/p>\n
