$\"\"$ <\/a>It\u2019s been uncomfortably quiet at this humble little blog.\u00a0 This is due in large part to a friend of mine who goes by the name \u201cdissertation.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s very needy; I\u2019m hoping soon to part company with him.<\/p>\n

At any rate, I thought I\u2019d share a bit about some upcoming events that you may be interested in.\u00a0 The first is the annual gathering of the Jonathan Edwards Society<\/a> in Northampton, Massachusetts.\u00a0 Some of you out there don\u2019t care about Edwards.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine.\u00a0 We can still be friends (kind of).\u00a0 Others, however, share an interest in America\u2019s greatest theologian.\u00a0 In fact, that interest borders on affection, perhaps even reverence.\u00a0 I\u2019ll go out on a historiographical limb and say that there is perhaps no one person from the eighteenth-century who draws more interest in America than Jonathan Edwards.\u00a0 Perhaps Ben Franklin?\u00a0 Well, the Ben Franklin society is a \u201cgiving club\u201d at Penn.<\/p>\n

The JES<\/a> is a giving society too, but we give papers, not money.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking forward to this event held from October 6-9, 2011, just two weeks away.\u00a0 If you\u2019re so inclined, drop by and hear a number of papers on topics related to Edwards (here\u2019s my abstract<\/a>), including submissions from Collin Hansen, Wes Pastor, and Chris Chun.\u00a0 Some papers, I think, will be staunchly evangelical, others more theologically progressive.\u00a0 I anticipate a vital debate, even as I look forward to visiting the home of the theologian who has had the deepest impact on me.<\/p>\n

Another society that I\u2019m a part of is the Society for the Advancement of Ecclesial Theology<\/a> (SAET), which meets from October 9-11 in Oak Park, Illinois.\u00a0 I\u2019ve mentioned the SAET on this blog before; it\u2019s getting a great deal of attention these days as interest in the pastor-theologian model spreads.\u00a0 At the SAET, we\u2019ll discuss James Davison Hunter\u2019s rich monograph To Change the World<\/em> (Oxford, 2010).\u00a0 We\u2019ll think together about how the book\u2019s discussion of cultural transformation relates to evangelical and pastoral life.\u00a0 Led with excellence by Todd Wilson and Gerald Hiestand, this will be a rich event.<\/p>\n

Participants in the SAET First Fellowship<\/a> this year include fellows Greg Thompson of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia; Jay Thomas of Chapel Hill Bible Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; John Yates the Younger of Holy Trinity Church in Raleigh, North Carolina; and Preston Sprinkle of Eternity Bible College in Simi Valley, California.\u00a0 This group of evangelical pastors and theologians is diverse, God-driven, and high-powered.<\/p>\n
