{"id":1098,"date":"2015-01-20T11:16:47","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T18:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/searchingfortomsawyer\/?p=530"},"modified":"2015-01-20T11:16:47","modified_gmt":"2015-01-20T18:16:47","slug":"a-dads-playbook-for-forging-faith-in-his-kids-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/timwright\/2015\/01\/a-dads-playbook-for-forging-faith-in-his-kids-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A Dad&#8217;s Playbook for Forging Faith in his Kids&#8211;Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><em>(Many great books have been written recently about\u00a0how to be more intentional in\u00a0forging faith in the home. \u00a0Most so far have been written by female authors and while inclusive, tend to speak better to moms and women. \u00a0Over the next several weeks I want to speak to dads in male language about their unique call to forge faith in their kids. \u00a0My hope is to turn this into a free e-book. \u00a0So comments, suggestions, ideas, along the way are welcome and appreciated.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hey, dad,<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that according to research the <em>primary influencer<\/em> of faith in your kids <em>is not<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The youth director<\/li>\n<li>The Pastor<\/li>\n<li>The Sunday School program<\/li>\n<li>The Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say that the above are not important to the faith development of your kids. As we\u2019ll see, they are.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>But the number 1 influencer of faith in kids is\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u2026M O M!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s number 1! Mom\u2019s number 1!<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.search-institute.org\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Effective Christian Education: A National Study of Protestant Congregations, <\/em><\/a>1990, Search Institute)<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you read that and immediately feel deflated. (Over the last few years culture has not been kind to dads, suggesting that perhaps dads have gone the way of the black and white TV. And this simply adds more fuel to the claim.)<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you read that and shrug your shoulders because it seems so obvious. Maybe your mom was the primary faith former in your home. Maybe you\u2019ve followed that parental modeling and have left faith formation to your spouse. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/searchingfortomsawyer\/files\/2015\/01\/1145736_63100326.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-532\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/searchingfortomsawyer\/files\/2015\/01\/1145736_63100326-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"1145736_63100326\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My hope is that it brings out your God-given, testosterone-driven sense of competition; that something stirs in your gut that says, \u201cWhat do I need to do to be number 1?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>(I know that forming faith in our kids is not a competition. It\u2019s a team sport that takes mom, dad, grandparents, mentors, and the Church. But competition is one of the gifts God has created into the DNA of men that can motivate us to good, noble actions.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A confession: <\/strong>Guys, you know how coaches use \u201cbillboard\u201d material to motivate the team? A snarky comment from a player whose team you will be playing in a few days? A headline calling the teams\u2019 talent into question? A point spread declaring the team an overwhelming underdog?<\/p>\n<p>I did a little billboarding just now. Research does say that, according to most youth, mom is the primary faith influencer in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>But dad\u2026<strong><em>you come in a close second!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think about the implications of that! The way you live your life\u2026the way you live out your faith (or don\u2019t live out your faith) is second only to mom (and not by much) in the impact on the faith quest of your kids.
