My Thanks Before Chapter 4 Begins…

My Thanks Before Chapter 4 Begins… December 14, 2021

Firstly, I apologise for not pumping out a huge amount of content recently. Well, I have been, in reality, but in different places and in a way yet to be released.

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye.

But only for a while.

It’s been fun here. And I have to thank Patheos for hosting me and us all this time. When I first joined, from my second iteration – Skeptic Ink Network (SIN), where I was a founder member – I was stoked to join such a prestigious network. And we were supported somewhat more then. In that time, I even edited a book that showcased many of the writers here at Patheos Nonreligious – Not Seeing God: Atheism in the 21st Century [UK]. Please grab it, it’s a great book. Anyway, it’s a long way formn my humble beginnings of my own littgle independent blog, and even writing for John Loftus at Debunking Christianity.

But times change. I would like to say more about this, but alas, not here, not now. For now, thank you Patheos for hosting our outbursts and essays, rants and raves, insights and outspoken opinions.

I was happy to have fit in here, neatly into the cadre of writers that carried on growing. The amount of output has actually been staggering, if I may say so myself, for the pittance I receive (as soon as I joined, Facebook changed their algorithms and strangled income). I think it may be over 4200 posts now. That is literally millions of words. labour labor (that’s be changing, dag nam it) of love.

ATP has grown. No, not to remotely anything like The Friendly Atheist, but we get enough readers and certainly a fair few comments.

I say we, of course, because there are people I really, really need to thank.

First, Jim Jones. What a legend. Moderating comments through the nannyfilter on a consistent basis. Please let me send you some books. Email me. Or something. Hands together for the great Jim Jones! No, not that one, this one! Whoop!

Second, Bert. Bert, Bert, Bert. What a wonderful man. Thank you so much for everything you have done here and continue to do. As you say, it keeps your brain active – our brains. But also their brains. You know, the rabble that read our dross quality content. And I hope so much that you continue at our new place, OnlySky. Your writing is enjoyable and insightful, and wide-ranging. I love that. I love that we talk about anything and everything here. So, muchas gracias, amigo.

And, of course, all of my other contributors over time: Alan Duval, Jeremiah Traegar and the many more. They have helped build a repository of awesomeness here.

Massive appreciation also to guest posters – regular ones like David Austin, and less regular ones or those providing deconversion accounts. Long may that also continue.

And thank you to you. Yes, you. Okay, not so much you, but you, and you.

You have all been here, reading and lurking, shouting and jostling, applauding and lauding, tutting and criticising. Love it. This whole project has always been, and will continue to be, disseminating philosophy in a popular way to an audience. Yes, some of my pieces are long and you don’t read them, just flying in for the comments. Cool – it’s a home, a community. But others do read them – thanks! I hope all of my writing, whether philosophical or political or whatever, has been of use, of challenge, of comfort, of interest.

Please come join me – us.

I even need to thank the naysayers. Some of them have put up with a lot of robust pushback and still they come. Bravery or stupidity – it’s a fine line. But they are committed, and there is something to be said for taking that commitment into the lion’s den. Dave, you are welcome at my new place. Come challenge me.

But I would also like to know if other less committed people – people plagued with doubts and questions – have ever found this place useful. It’s not that I want to pat myself on the back, but I am intrigued as to whether this is merely a place for confirmation, or whether it has been a place for successful challenge and answers that have changed people’s directions. Because that is also an integral part of whast we do.

And this includes not just from what I say, but from what so many erudite and phenomenal commenters say in the threads below so many articles. If our writing sinpires conversation, then job done, whether we are the ones to enlighten or challenge, or whether that be the fellow commenters.

Please, please let us know in the comments below.

Perhaps the success of the Nonreligious channel might have something to say of its exodus…

What I am trying to say is that I hope the pleasure hasn’t just been mine (or Bert’s, or Alan’s…) but ours. That we have shared enjoyment (and shared annoyance at the nannyfilter and my far-too-soft comments policy…;) Hey ho) in this ATP hive of scum and villainy.

Star Wars quotes aside, thanks. That’s really what I want to say. Thanks. A lot.

If I have forgotten anyone in my appreciation, put it down to my MS brain.

Which brings me to those who supported my HSCT – stem cell treatment for my primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS). We followed the science and the evidence, and those who donated helped me to remain on a plateau without my progressive multiple sclerosis progressing. Whoop! You know who you are. Immense gratitude. And, to just hammer home the efficacy (and evidence-based nature) of the treatment, one of my local hospitals in Southampton is just now offering the treatment, as well as it being available on the NHS in Scotland (and a few other select hospitals in England). Of course, time was of the essence, and I needed it ASAP to avoid immediate progression myself (and it is unlikely, with the progressive version, that I would have qualified for the treatment in Southampton three years later anyway – PPMS [the worst kind] sufferers are pretty much left to get on with it…).

Big up to science and the generosity of people!

Back to writing and content production. I will be absent from blogging for a few weeks, and for that I apologise. Can’t be helped.

However, there are many ways you can still interact with me or each other. Please follow, subscribe, and do all of those type of things:

And please, please sign up through this link to OnlySky. It will help them know who has migrated over from here and I might even get a pat on the back if lots of you do. No, seriously, please come and join us at the new venture because it is genuinely going to be an awesome place.

But it’s only made even more awesome if you are there too. No, once again, not you…but you.

Laters brothers, sisters, blog lurkers and utopian dreamers, thinkers, arguers, nonreligious questioners and atheist screamers.
