I started out today attempting to write\u00a0about an entirely different subject \u2013 one that\u00a0had gotten my\u00a0Italian up <\/em>as I had put it.\u00a0It\u2019s a theme to\u00a0which I may return\u00a0in time.<\/p>\n

But right now,\u00a0that original\u00a0topic\u00a0seems little more than trivial in a world that\u2019s been set afire.<\/p>\n

The brutality and the reality of\u00a0this story<\/a>\u00a0hit me with full force this afternoon.<\/p>\n

ISIS, taking full advantage of the chaos created by our so-called Smart Diplomacy <\/em>in Libya, has\u00a0today released a propaganda video detailing the\u00a0unspeakable evil of having beheaded 21 men solely because of\u00a0their Christian faith.<\/p>\n

And now ISIS threatens Rome.<\/p>\n

The West is at war with evil itself.<\/p>\n

Ignoring it, or simply refusing to understand its origins and\u00a0its goals, will\u00a0not make that war go away.<\/p>\n

ISIS seeks nothing less than complete world\u00a0domination.<\/p>\n

And right now, ISIS\u2019s efforts are succeeding.<\/p>\n

Some Islamic leaders, such as the King of Jordan and the President of Egypt, fully understand the threat.<\/p>\n

And Europe is slowly awakening.<\/p>\n

Let us pray that we, too, will\u00a0soon act \u2013 with all due force, courage, and wisdom \u2013\u00a0to meet this evil head on.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, The Anchoress, Elizabeth Scalia, has written movingly<\/a> about this latest atrocity:<\/p>\n

Let us ponder the increasingly chaotic world in which they were slain; let us consider the people who murdered them, who seem hell-bent on Apocalypse<\/a>. It feels as though a world full of small fires, public and private, are simply the purposeful distractions meant to prevent our noticing a bonfire in our future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Elizabeth then lists the names of all 21 men, and asks for their prayers as they take their place alongside the ancient martyrs.<\/p>\n

Let us join her in that effort as we today beseech them, \u201cPlease pray for us, and for the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n
