It\u00a0tightly binds together the sanctity of our earthly home with\u00a0the sanctity of human life \u2013 at every stage, and in every form, without exception.<\/p>\n<p>As an encyclical addressed to humanity as a whole, it is\u00a0subject to parsing,\u00a0exegesis, and critical application. As a pronouncement to the faithful in particular, it is, in addition,\u00a0subject to a humble heart; it\u00a0cannot be dismissed peremptorily.<\/p>\n<p>As many of you know, the title is taken directly from the <em>Canticle of the Sun<\/em>, or the\u00a0<em>Canticle of the Creatures<\/em>, written in the 13th Century, by the (perhaps best described as)\u00a0<em>vagabond<\/em> Saint whom the current Bishop of Rome honors as his namesake.<\/p>\n<p>On this feast day of St. Francis, let us go <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-texts.com\/chr\/wosf\/wosf22.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">back to the original source<\/a>,\u00a0as we contemplate together all that has been declared good, even\u00a0<em>very good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let us,\u00a0together, recall St. Francis as he honors <em>and<\/em>\u00a0submits to\u00a0both\u00a0the Creator <em>and<\/em> the created:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Most high, omnipotent, good Lord,<br>\nPraise, glory and honor and benediction all, are Thine.<br>\nTo Thee alone do they belong, most High,<br>\nAnd there is no man fit to mention Thee.<br>\nPraise be to Thee, my Lord, with all Thy creatures,<br>\nEspecially to my worshipful brother sun,<br>\nThe which lights up the day, and through him dost Thou brightness give;<br>\nAnd beautiful is he and radiant with splendor great;<br>\nOf Thee, most High, signification gives.<\/p>\n<p>Praised be my Lord, for sister moon and for the stars,<br>\nIn heaven Thou hast formed them clear and precious and fair.<\/p>\n<p>Praised be my Lord for brother wind<br>\nAnd for the air and clouds and fair and every kind of weather,<br>\nBy the which Thou givest to Thy creatures nourishment.<br>\nPraised be my Lord for sister water,<br>\nThe which is greatly helpful and humble and precious and pure.<\/p>\n<p>Praised be my Lord for brother fire,<br>\nBy the which Thou lightest up the dark.<br>\nAnd fair is he and gay and mighty and strong.<\/p>\n<p>Praised be my Lord for our sister, mother earth,<br>\n[which] sustains and keeps us<br>\nAnd brings forth diverse fruits with grass and flowers bright.<\/p>\n<p>Praised be my Lord for those who for Thy love forgive<br>\nAnd weakness bear and tribulation.<br>\nBlessed those who shall in peace endure,<br>\nFor by Thee, most High, shall they be crowned.<br>\nPraised be my Lord for our sister, the bodily death,<br>\nFrom the which no living man can flee.<br>\nWoe to them who die in mortal sin;<br>\nBlessed those who shall find themselves in Thy most holy will,<br>\nFor the second death shall do them no ill.<\/p>\n<p>Praise ye and bless ye my Lord, and give Him thanks,<br>\nAnd be subject unto Him with great humility.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peace<\/p>\n<p>Image Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.m.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Saint_Francis_of_Assisi,_by_Jos%C3%A9_de_Ribera#\/media\/File%3ASaint_francis042.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a>,\u00a0Public Domain<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Laudato si\u2019, whether you approach it with the humility of an open and teachable heart, or whether you view it through the\u00a0eyes of a\u00a0questioning\u00a0and thoughtful skeptic, is an extraordinary mosaic, one which artfully\u00a0draws from\u00a0the material, the moral, and the spiritual.
