There are so many of them<\/strong>.<\/p>\nA torrent of fresh faces,<\/p>\n
Numb, panicked, silenced.<\/p>\n
Images bloodied,<\/p>\n
Dissolving, inseparable, into\u00a0one.<\/p>\n
Their young bodies absorbing<\/p>\n
A seething hatred with every bullet.<\/p>\n
Casualties in a deadly conflict long underway.<\/p>\n
A world war on a path uncertain,<\/p>\n
Even to those who now wage it.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
There are so many of them<\/strong>.<\/p>\nA torrent of hidden faces,<\/p>\n
Trained, angry, set loose.<\/p>\n
Consumed by a blood revenge,<\/p>\n
They unleash their hate with every bullet,<\/p>\n
Destroying young and old alike.<\/p>\n
Blinded by rage, they reject any notion<\/p>\n
That each was made in their own self-same image.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
There are so many of them<\/strong>.<\/p>\nA torrent of mixed faces,<\/p>\n
Frightened, vulnerable, away from anything familiar,<\/p>\n
Seeking shelter from their tormentors,<\/p>\n
Looking so much like those who rage against us,<\/p>\n
Yet, too, made in our\u00a0own\u00a0self-same image,<\/p>\n
Our compassion stirs, as do our fears.<\/p>\n
The compassion is genuine, the fears not irrational.<\/p>\n
Our reactions are not those grounded in hate<\/p>\n
As some have said \u2013 no, not when war has ruptured our reality.<\/p>\n
But neither are they fully graced by selflessness and mercy.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lord, we need your help to sort it out<\/strong>.<\/p>\nWe turn to you, the one who breathed<\/p>\n
The very spirit of life into each one of us,<\/p>\n
Help us to assuage our fears,<\/p>\n
And help us to temper our<\/p>\n
Exceedingly prudent reflexes,<\/p>\n
With a full measure of solidarity and kindness and charity.<\/p>\n
Lead us to more fully see that very\u00a0one<\/em>\u00a0standing before us,<\/p>\nAnd not just so many faces in the crowd.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
