Fear is powerful. It is unremitting. It is fierce. It is real.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fear disrupts and disables.<\/span><\/p>\n

While a few of our most compelling nightmares may eventually find their way to us, most never do.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened\u201d \u2013 Mark Twain<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As a parent, I can\u2019t imagine a day without some degree of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Concern for their safety, anxiety about their future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, I cling most desperately to these same fears for myself.<\/span><\/p>\n

All too often, the exact source of our fears is unknown. Or they\u2019re simply too deeply hidden for us to fully embrace them.<\/span><\/p>\n

But that only makes their resistance to logic, mindfulness, and prayer even more potent, and our attempts to cast them aside ever more futile.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cEven though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death\u00a0I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me\u201d \u2013 Psalm 23<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I was reminded the other day that scripture has a lot to say about facing, and turning aside, our fears. Some say that there are 365 instances from Genesis to Revelation, but I think that that\u2019s apocryphal (no, I haven\u2019t actually counted).<\/span><\/p>\n

But here<\/span><\/a> is a terrific list compiled by Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D.<\/span><\/p>\n

Read it, savor it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Incorporate one or more into your day.<\/span><\/p>\n

And pray.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get Up And Do Not Be Afraid<\/em>!<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll leave you now with one of my favorites, at the corner where love and fear meet \u2013 and love prevails:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no fear in love, but\u00a0perfect love casts out fear; for\u00a0fear\u00a0has to do with punishment, and\u00a0whoever fears\u00a0has not reached perfection in love\u201d \u2013 1 John 4:18\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I pray that you can face your deepest fear today.<\/span><\/p>\n
