It’s been a long day of travel. I left Minneapolis just after mid-day on Thursday, and arrived at my destination on the west coast of Sri Lanka at the equivalent of 2am on Saturday in Minneapolis (11am here in Sri Lanka). The boys in the photo above gave us a nice welcome during our 2-hour van ride, but that was merely the final leg of a long journey. From MSP, I flew to JFK, where I met the other members... Read more

In fact, it’s the world’s biggest plane. I’m sitting at JFK, about to board a flight to Dubai, and then it’s on to Sri Lanka. I’ll be on the ground by Saturday morning, local time. I’ll be posting all next week about what I see and experience. I hope you’ll follow my posts and those of my fellow travelers. You can find us on facebook, and on twitter at #WVbloggers. Read more

The JoPa Group — that’s Jones and Pagitt — is putting on a whizbang event early next year, and I think that pretty much every reader of this blog should attend. It’s called Emergence Christianity: A National Gathering with Phyllis Tickle and Friends, and it’s going to be awesome. The reason for the event is Phyllis’s new book, Emergence Christianity: What It Is, Where It Is Going, and Why It Matters, and everyone who registers gets a free copy of the... Read more

If you follow the lunatic fringes of Pentecostal-evangelicalism, you’ve heard of Todd Bentley. A former child molester, Bentley is a YouTube star for screaming on stage, claiming to cure cancer, and claiming to cure that cancer by bashing old ladies’ heads on stage. An evangelist preacher who has claimed he can cure people of their illnesses by hitting and kicking them has been banned from entering the UK by the Home Office. Todd Bentley, a controversial revivalist healer based in... Read more

One of the things that most bugs me about the way that my coreligionists talk about the activity of God is that they almost alway see that activity ex post facto. That is, they make a decision, or something happens to them, and then they say something like, “The Lord’s hand was really in that.” Todd Littleton pretty much calls bullshit on that in a great post about thinking theologically before and in the midst of decisions, not just after. He... Read more

Although you wouldn’t know it by my lowly Silver Elite status these days on Delta, I have done a fair amount of international travel. Later this week, I’ll be in the air for over 20 hours, traveling from Minneapolis/St. Paul to New York (JFK) to Dubai to Columbo, Sri Lanka. My fellow World Vision travelers and I have been trading flying tips on our Facebook group, and several trip members are worried about sleeping or not sleeping on the flights.... Read more

In the wake of the Chik-fil-A silliness, the word “hate” got thrown around a lot. Was it a hateful act to eat at CFA on August 1? Was it hateful for the mayors of Chicago and Boston to say that the chain is not welcome in their towns? And, of course, was it hateful for the CEO of that chain to make statements about his company’s stance on same sex marriage? At HuffPo, David Duran is convinced that the way... Read more

So, Ben Witherington has posted a rant against emerging church rants. Our “anti-ecclesial rhetoric” is gettin’ him down and killin’ his buzz. After deigning to teach us what the word ekklesia really means, Ben writes, Thus, when one gets to the emerging church folks, and you hear a lot of their anti-ecclesial rhetoric, it has a long precedent in Protestantism, whether it is Luther railing against the Pope, or Calvin complaining about the situation in Switzerland, or Wesley struggling with... Read more

This will be me in a week, flipping tables, crossing rope bridges, and just generally Hungry Like the Wolf. Yeah, that was filmed in Sri Lanka. I’d love for you to follow me on the trip and consider sponsoring a child as well. More info here. Read more
