I talked to Pastor Ken on the phone today. Called up his church and he answered. We chatted for about half-an-hour and agreed to hang on to each other’s phone numbers. Of course, we disagreed on some things, but agreed that friendship is possible and desirous. He seemed like a good guy, and I got to hear part of his story, which was quite interesting.

I’m hobbling around like a drunkard with my knee in bandages. The surgery was a success.

Today is the day that the Edina Police Chaplains have a chili feed for the cops. The Rabbi’s is usually the hottest chili, but mine beat his this year.

Life is good.

The Year in Blogging: Top Posts…with Goodies!

I passed a decade as a blogger this year. My first post was on January 25, 2004. Since then, I have published 2,747 posts and collected nearly 50,000 comments. Probably even more momentous, I’ve nurtured some thoughts on the atonement from blog posts to an ebook to a major release from HarperOne, coming March 24. If that’s not enough to make you believe in the power of blogging, I don’t know what is.

My posting frequency was down in 2014, especially in the second half of the year as I was redrafting the book, then revising it. Blogging has changed a lot in the last ten years, and now that I’ve sent off the final revisions on the book (yesterday), I’m going to consider how to reenter the blogosphere. I would love to hear from you, readers, about what you’d like. Would you like me to bring back “Questions That Haunt Christianity“? Would you like a lectionary series? Dispatches from the road? More posts about hunting? 😉

Being Dumb Is Bad; Being Mean Is Worse

2012 may have been the year of websites and Facebook pages that make Christians look stupid. Well, to be honest, Christians make themselves look stupid plenty — and it seems the more conservative or Pentecostal, the more likely they’ve posted stupid stuff on YouTube or elsewhere that other Christians and non-Christians then post to show how stupid those other Christians are.

I’m not immune. One of my biggest posts of 2012 was pointing out The Worst Church Website in the World. That drove some serious traffic my way.

But I, for one, am growing tired. Unintentionally sexual church signs are no longer humorous to me, and posting old videos of Bob Larson and new videos by William Tapley don’t make me cringe anymore. They’re just dumb.

And with 2.2 billion Christians in the world, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that there are a few dumb ones.
