last post<\/a>.\u00a0 Almost immediately after posting it, I received a couple emails from friends asking what exactly I meant in titling it, It\u2019s \u201cNot About Me.\u201d\u00a0 What I meant is this: One the one hand, I\u2019m not gay, so I necessarily don\u2019t feel the passion about this issue that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons do.<\/p>\nOn the other hand, I\u2019m not a social scientist.\u00a0 I won\u2019t be reporting on my blog in some sterile, forensic fashion about research that says our society will be quantitatively better if same sex marriage is legalized.\u00a0 If that were the case, I could throw my hands in the air and say that the research isn\u2019t my opinion, it\u2019s just what the research says.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s not the case.\u00a0 Instead, I\u2019m somewhere in the middle.\u00a0 Rod and I, I\u2019m sure, will both bring research to bear on the blogalogue, and we\u2019ll use data to support our viewpoints.\u00a0 But, in the end, we\u2019re not scientists, and we\u2019re not gay.\u00a0 We\u2019re opinionators.\u00a0 I\u2019m not ashamed of that fact \u2014 I\u2019m just trying to call it what it is.<\/p>\n
So I tried to communicate that on the last post, and I failed in some sense.<\/p>\n
<\/span><\/p>\nWhich exemplifies the shortcomings of the blogging medium.\u00a0 In fact, the medium is so limited that some of my friends have warned me not to enter into a blog-based dialogue on such a sensitive.\u00a0 They fear that I\u2019ll be misunderstood and misinterpreted, that a blog cannot communicate the nuance and complexities necessary to this topic, and that the comment section will become a verbally violent place.\u00a0 And they may be right in all of those concerns.<\/p>\n
But every medium has limitations \u2014 just look at the \u201cnews\u201d that passes for the major network newscasts.\u00a0 So I endeavor to do two things as I enter into this blogalogue.\u00a0 First, acknowledge the limits of a blogalogue.\u00a0 We won\u2019t solve this issue; and it\u2019s unlikely that we\u2019ll write anything that hasn\u2019t been written before.\u00a0 But maybe we\u2019ll shed light on some things, and hopefully we\u2019ll dialogue in a way that will provoke further dialogue in the comment sections, at coffee shops, over dinner tables, and at church committee meetings.<\/p>\n
And second, Rod and I are going to complement our written blog dialogue with an in-person conversation (this Thursday), maybe some video, and even a closing podcast conversation.\u00a0 The point being, Rod and I will have the benefit of breaking bread together at the beginning of our dialogue.\u00a0 You probably won\u2019t if you get into a debate with someone in the comment section.\u00a0 But how about you act like you have broken bread with the other?\u00a0 That might be a good rule for us all to live by.<\/p>\n
