My friend, Patton Dodd<\/a>, has a piece up on Slate<\/a> in advance of Alexandra Pelosi\u2019s HBO documentary, The Trials of Ted Haggard<\/i><\/a>, premiering tonight.\u00a0 Patton used to work for Haggard and New Life Church, primarily as a writer and editor, so he writes about Haggard with some authority.\u00a0 Money Quote from Patton:<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Two years have gone by with little more than occasional peeps from Haggard, and now he\u2019s back in The Trials of Ted Haggard<\/a><\/em>, an HBO film directed by Alexandra Pelosi, a sort of sequel to her Friends of God<\/em>,
\nthat documents Haggard\u2019s dreary life in exile\u2013no job, no home, no
\nfriends, no ministry. Earlier this week, when CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper
\ninterviewed Pelosi, he tried to open with a question about the fallen
\nminister\u2019s \u201cspiritual restoration.\u201d Pelosi interrupted Cooper before he
\ncould finish the question, saying she couldn\u2019t speak to Haggard\u2019s
\nmental or spiritual condition. Fair enough. But Cooper\u2019s question is
\nthe right one\u2013for journalists, for Haggard, for his former church, and
\nfor countless other congregations that have suffered similar betrayals.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I spoke to Patton on the phone last night, and one of the more vexing questions in my mind is this: Why is Ted Haggard promoting a documentary about himself?\u00a0 It seems odd, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Would Roger Smith promote Roger & Me<\/i><\/a>?\u00a0 Definitely not.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

I\u2019d like a journalist to ask Pelosi and\/or Haggard what is the financial arrangement between them, and that might color how we all view this \u201cdocumentary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regardless, I\u2019ll be watching it tonight.\u00a0 And I\u2019ll be interested to read all of your comments here.<\/p>\n
