As I\u2019ve mentioned here before<\/a>, I\u2019m teaching a three-year Doctor of Ministry cohort<\/a> at Fuller Theological Seminary<\/a>, beginning this June (we\u2019ll meet for two weeks in June 2011, 12, and 13).\u00a0 I\u2019m really looking forward to this journey because, like many followers of Jesus, I need a kick in my spiritual pants.<\/p>\n

I already tend toward the intellectual, to be sure.\u00a0 My recent posts about demons<\/a> and angels<\/a> hint at what my friends already know: that I\u2019m predisposed to believe only those things that make rational sense.\u00a0 In all honesty, that makes an uneasy postmodernist, since my bias is toward a more empirical worldview.<\/p>\n

But, as much as I love theological and doctrinal wrangling, I know that spirituality is actually at the heart of the Jesus Way.<\/p>\n

As my dissertation has dragged on over several years, I\u2019ve not really afforded myself the chance to reinvest in Christian spirituality, as I had in several<\/a> of<\/a> my<\/a> books<\/a>.\u00a0 Writing a dissertation is, of course, a thoroughly intellectual endeavor.\u00a0 Not that it doesn\u2019t test one\u2019s spirit \u2014 it does! \u2014 but the method of writing an acceptable dissertation is one of qualified truth claims backed by warrants and evidence.\u00a0 The intuition that is so valuable in spirituality is not needed for this type of academic work \u2014 in fact, it most likely gets in the way.<\/p>\n

But as the dissertation winds down (defense date, April 25 \u2014 all are welcome, as long as you buy me a shot afterward), I\u2019m turning my mind and heart toward the course.\u00a0 I was spurred on in this after a phone conversation with Lauren Winner<\/a> who, along with Phyllis Tickle<\/a>, will be co-teaching the first year of the cohort.\u00a0 Lauren teaches a survey course on Christian spirituality at Duke University Divinity School.\u00a0 As we talked through our different duties for the first year of the cohort, I couldn\u2019t help but thinking how much I\u2019ve got to learn from Lauren.\u00a0 She\u2019ll be teaching the history of Christian spirituality, and I\u2019ll be teaching the theology of Christian spirituality.\u00a0 Plus, we\u2019ll both be learning from the DMin students who are all in day-to-day ministry themselves.<\/p>\n

Just a few more days of editing my dissertation before I make a big pot of coffee and start (re-)reading the many texts for the cohort.\u00a0 It\u2019s gonna be great.<\/p>\n
