reports on Wild Goose, which happened last weekend.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In general, I thought that the quality of talks at the Goose was incredibly high.\u00a0 Like, as high as the old Emergent\/YS Conventions and Christianity21, which to this point have been the events of our tribe that have had the best quality and quantity of talks and discussions.<\/p>\n<p>I was a speaker host, so I spent much of Friday and Saturday running around, introducing speakers, and hearing bits and pieces of talks.\u00a0 I missed some that I really wanted to hear.\u00a0 But I caught some that I hadn\u2019t expected to.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what I saw and heard in talks:<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3180\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nadia Bolz-Weber in the GeoDome (photo by Courtney Perry)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fentity%2FNadia-Bolz-Weber%2FB001JP85LG%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dsr_ntt_srch_lnk_1%26qid%3D1309270150%26sr%3D1-1%23&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Nadia Bolz-Weber<\/strong><\/a> led a discussion about her church and ministry in the Geo Dome.\u00a0 It was an overflow crowd on the first day.\u00a0 I caught Nadia answering a couple questions about authority.\u00a0 Nadia\u2019s thesis is basically that, because she has submitted herself to a denominational authority, she doesn\u2019t get to do whatever she wants.\u00a0 In fact, she doesn\u2019t get to do the same kinds of things that her parishioners do.\u00a0 She has, she argued, voluntarily given up some of her freedoms to take on the ordained shepherding role in HFASS.\u00a0 (Nadia and I disagree on this very point, but I do have great respect for her and her position on this \u2014 and I do admire her for living out to the full what many denominationalists only pay lip service to.)<\/p>\n<p>I introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fentity%2FPhyllis-Tickle%2FB001IGLRSY%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dsr_ntt_srch_lnk_1%26qid%3D1309270115%26sr%3D1-1%23&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Phyllis Tickle<\/strong><\/a> by saying, \u201cPhyllis and I agree on about 98% of stuff; but on the 2%, we disagree vehemently.\u201d\u00a0 She then gave me a big kiss on the lips and went on to give a talk about what she\u2019s seeing in Emergence Christianity \u2014 she\u2019s currently working on a book, <em>Emergence Christianity: An Interim Report<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fentity%2FFrank-Schaeffer%2FB000AP9HNQ%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dsr_ntt_srch_lnk_1%26qid%3D1309270080%26sr%3D1-1%23&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Frank Schaeffer<\/strong><\/a>, whom I have often read but never met, gave an uproarious talk based on his new book,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0306819287\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399373&amp;creativeASIN=0306819287\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em> Sex, Mom, and God: How the Bible\u2019s Strange Take on Sex Led to Crazy Politics\u2013and How I Learned to Love Women (and Jesus) Anyway<\/em><\/a> (Frank generously signed a copy for me, so watch this space for a forthcoming review).\u00a0 Frank is a gifted writer, to be sure, but I was truly impressed at what a good speaker he is.\u00a0 He\u2019s hilarious, but he can also deliver a political or theological zinger with gusto.\u00a0 Frank has posted about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/frank-schaeffer\/the-wild-goose-revival-ca_b_884957.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000008\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">his experience at the Goose<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We understood each other, understood why it was a big deal that some  of us were gay, open and happy in spite of everything, understood why  some of us still wanted to follow Jesus, even though the world we came  from \u2014 far right, hate-and-fear-driven wacko religion \u2014 had done its  best to turn Jesus into Attila the Hun and\/or Michele Bachmann.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fentity%2FJay-Bakker%2FB001HD02QQ%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dsr_ntt_srch_lnk_1%26qid%3D1309269682%26sr%3D1-1%23&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Jay Bakker<\/strong><\/a> delivered a courageous talk in which he confronted the <a title=\"What Jim Wallis Might Be Missing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tonyjones\/2011\/05\/10\/what-jim-wallis-might-be-missing\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">kerfuffle at Sojourners<\/a> a <a title=\"Adding Nuance to the Sojourners Kerfuffle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tonyjones\/2011\/05\/12\/adding-nuance-to-the-sojourners-kerfuffle\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">couple months ago<\/a>.\u00a0 It was a delicate situation, since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fentity%2FJim-Wallis%2FB000APP9BU%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dsr_ntt_srch_lnk_1%26qid%3D1309269719%26sr%3D1-1%23&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Jim Wallis<\/strong><\/a> was at the Goose, and Jim\u2019s wife, Joy, is on the board.\u00a0 I thought that Jay handled it well and respectfully of Sojo and Jim while nevertheless calling them to speak up on behalf of GLBT persons as a matter of justice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fentity%2FPeter-Rollins%2FB001JRZZC6%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dsr_ntt_srch_lnk_1%26qid%3D1309270037%26sr%3D8-1%23&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Peter Rollins<\/strong><\/a> spoke for the first time on the christology that he\u2019s developing.\u00a0 I only caught the very tail end of his talk, so I hope to talk to him privately about it in the next few days.\u00a0 I did catch Pete and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Rev-Vince-Anderson-and-his-Love-Choir\/74494194069\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Reverend Vince<\/strong><\/a> on Sunday morning, in which they announced an upcoming tour of de-evangelism.\u00a0 I find Pete\u2019s message getting clearer all the time \u2014 not less complicated, but more understandable.\u00a0 I hope he continues to gain traction.<\/p>\n<p>I caught bits and pieces of other talks by Brian McLaren, Jim Wallis, Don Shriver, David Dark, Elissa Elliot, and Kristina Keefe-Perry.\u00a0 I wish I
