  1. Singer-songwriter David Wilcox\u2019 CD Out Beyond Ideas<\/em> is an incredible collection of music based on Daniel Ladinsky\u2019s equally good book\u00a0Love Poems from God: Twelve Sacred Voices from the East and West.\u201d Why pray? To experience this love for yourself.<\/li>\n
  2. Martin Laird\u2019s\u00a0A Sunlit Absence: Silence, Awareness, and Contemplation<\/em> is a small, 200-page gem of a book on prayer that is a recent companion piece to his previous (and also excellent) book Into the Silent Land: A Guide to the Christian Practice of Contemplation.<\/li>\n
  3. If you do pray, as you mature in the practice, you will eventually find yourself in some form of a \u201cDark Night of the Soul,\u201d at which point Thomas Green\u2019s two books\u00a0When the Well Runs Dry: Prayer Beyond the Beginnings and\u00a0Drinking From A Dry Well <\/em>are invaluable.<\/li>\n
  4. Richard Rohr is one of our greatest living wisdom teachers. His Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer<\/em> is a contemporary spiritual classic. Everything Rohr has written is great, but perhaps also see, in particular, his more recent book\u00a0The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See. And in a world in which almost everyone\u2019s inbox is too full, I nevertheless cannot recommend highly enough his free daily e-mail meditations.<\/li>\n
  5. To throw a cross-cultural perspective into the mix, I am a huge fan of Paul Knitter\u2019s work on religious pluralism in general, and of his Without Buddha I Could Not Be A Christian<\/em> in particular. Knitter \u201ccrosses over\u201d from Buddhist<\/a> practices to Christian practices (including meditation and prayer), illuminating each tradition more fully from the perspective of the \u201cother.\u201d This book is an deeply personal and highly significant contribution to the theology of \u201creligious hybridity\u201d and \u201cdual belonging,\u201d which will likely be increasingly common in common years: religious adherents rejecting an \u201ceither\/or\u201d dual, refusing to choose only one path, and identifying as \u201cboth\u201d \u2014 for example, Christian and Buddhist, Jewish and Christian, Muslim and Hindu.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
