I awoke at about 4am on Thursday, which was unfortunate.\u00a0 But I made some coffee and did some writing.\u00a0 Dave<\/a> awoke a bit later and, likewise, sat and wrote.\u00a0 He\u2019s written several books<\/a> on community organizing and such, and I am even more impressed with his theological vision for his neightborhood\u2026and the world.\u00a0 The two of us are in many ways sympatico, and I plan to come back here to West End Brisbane for a longer stay sometime.<\/p>\n

Around 7:30, we walked a few blocks over to Black Star Coffee<\/a>, which is presently housed in a small warehouse.\u00a0 I watched (and filmed) as Matt roasted a batch of beans<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\n<p>He\u2019s already started a similar company (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.peoplescoffee.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">People\u2019s Coffee<\/a>) in New Zealand, and now he\u2019s helping at Blackstar for a while.\u00a0 Blackstar is a part of The Waiters Union, which is the community that Dave and Ange started when they moved back from India.\u00a0 Their commitment to the community of West End is really astounding, and Blackstar is a part of that.\u00a0 Matt joked about all of the emerging churches that have failed coffee houses in their pasts, and about how important it is to have a bigger vision than a cafe.\u00a0 Well, these guys have a bigger vision.\u00a0 They\u2019re also true coffee connesiers, and they pull an amazing shot:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A "Long Black" at Blackstar Coffee in Brisbane\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZWXoh8x2gxM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>The rest of the morning consisted of a personal and interesting conversation with a group that is basically the emergent-esque cohort in Brisbane.\u00a0 We talked about life and church and ministry and theology.\u00a0 I really, really enjoyed my time with these folks.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, Duncan drove me to his home on the Gold Coast.\u00a0 We went to his gym for an hour, then out to dinner with his family.\u00a0 On the way across the parking lot to the restaurant, it seemed that a tree was coming alive with birds.\u00a0 Duncan explained they were rainbow lorikeets, which make a racket for about 90 minutes each evening:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rainbow Lorikeets on The Gold Coast of Australia\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T7Jakpg2bi0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>After dinner, another conversation with church leaders and others from the Gold Coast, then off to bed.\u00a0 All in all, a long and gratifying day.\u00a0 I get Friday basically off, so I\u2019m looking forward to the down time.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I awoke at about 4am on Thursday, which was unfortunate.\u00a0 But I made some coffee and did some writing.\u00a0 Dave awoke a bit later and, likewise, sat and wrote.\u00a0 He\u2019s written several books on community organizing and such, and I am even more impressed with his theological vision for his neightborhood\u2026and the world.\u00a0 The two […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[40],"tags":[69,136,170,527,619,625,649],"class_list":["post-617","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-travels","tag-australia","tag-coffee","tag-dave-andrews","tag-rainbow-lorikeets","tag-the-gold-coast","tag-the-waiters-union","tag-travel"],"yoast_head":"\n<title>Australia Day Three -
