I read lots of books on war, inspired by a freshman writing seminar that I took with James Tatum at Dartmouth many years ago. (He turned that seminar into a book<\/a>.) Here are, in my estimation, the top five books on war:<\/p>\n

1. The Illiad<\/a> by Homer<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. The Things They Carried<\/a> by Tim O\u2019Brien<\/strong><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0The Red Badge of Courage<\/a>\u00a0by Stephen Crane<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War<\/a>\u00a0by Karl Marlantes<\/strong><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0A Rumor of War<\/a>\u00a0by Philip Caputo<\/strong><\/p>\n

I acknowledge the emphasis on Vietnam, but it seems that war generated some of the greatest writing of any war.<\/p>\n
