Interesting story in this morning\u2019s StarTribune<\/em>. Matt Rustad, a school board member in St. Francis, Minnesota, submitted a column<\/a> about paperless classrooms to the school district\u2019s monthly newsletter, The Courier<\/em>. Problem was, the column wasn\u2019t written by him. Instead, he found it in the comment section of a 2010 blog post, copied it, changed a couple phrases, and submitted it.<\/p>\n

That act in itself isn\u2019t so surprising. People are busted all the time for copying stuff from websites, paying for pre-written term papers, and the like. What is surprising is how Rustad explained his actions<\/a>:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rustad said in an interview Wednesday that he had spent little time in traditional schools, and that in home school he hadn\u2019t learned much about plagiarism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said he didn\u2019t view what he did as plagiarism<\/strong>, but that he had hoped readers would know whose work it was by a quote at the end of the column. The quote was from the original author, though readers might believe it was from an interview, not lifted from a blog comment. \u201cI see how it would be viewed as that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was ignorance. It was a mistake.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If I write about this craziness as implicating all homeschoolers, I\u2019ll get accused of painting with too broad a brush, as I did in my other<\/a> posts<\/a> on homeschooling<\/a>. But here\u2019s what became clear in all of the comments and opposing blog posts about homeschooling:<\/p>\n

\u2013 When I write against homeschooling, I use general and societal arguments.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013 When my opponents defend homeschooling, they use individual, personal anecdotes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, for example, I say, \u201cHomeschooling is bad for society because it weakens public education, and we\u2019ve decided that public education is one of our most important societal institutions. Every family that is Christian and committed to faithful citizenship should keep their kids in public schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then they say, \u201cYou don\u2019t know what\u2019s best for my family.\u201d \u201cMy kids are different.\u201d \u201cMy kids deserve a better education than the public school offers.\u201d \u201cI was homeschooled, and I turned out fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, you see, I\u2019m not talking about you<\/em> or your<\/em> kids<\/em>, and I\u2019m not talking about me<\/em> or my<\/em> kids<\/em>. I\u2019m talking about meta-issues here.<\/strong><\/p>\n
