{"id":10774,"date":"2014-12-20T10:36:58","date_gmt":"2014-12-20T15:36:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=10774"},"modified":"2014-12-20T10:36:59","modified_gmt":"2014-12-20T15:36:59","slug":"my-year-end-book-recommendations-in-tac-and-nro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/12\/my-year-end-book-recommendations-in-tac-and-nro.html","title":{"rendered":"My Year-End Book Recommendations in TAC and NRO"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I\u2019ve already shared with you guys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/12\/my-10-best-books-of-2014.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the ten best books that I read (for the first time) this year<\/a>, but in case you\u2019re still finishing up shopping for others, I\u2019ve also added my suggestions to both\u00a0<em>The American Conservative<\/em> and\u00a0<em>National Review<\/em>\u2018s gift guides for the end of the year. \u00a0 And my recommendations there are a little less narrowly tailored to my hobbyhorses\u2013so fewer philosophy of medicine and disease on\u00a0<em>those<\/em> lists.<\/p>\n<p>So head on over to both sites to see my ideas, and those of other writers:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/the-american-conservatives-christmas-reading\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Best of the Year at\u00a0<em>The American Conservative<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There were two books in 2014 that compelled me to host dinner parties in order to bribe my friends into reading and discussing them with me: Leslie Jamison\u2019s\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #27338d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1555976719\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1555976719&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=TXM7ITI4REOSJPVZ\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Empathy Exams<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and Eve Tushnet\u2019s\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #27338d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1594715424\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1594715424&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=QC4OVQFRLU2U7GJZ\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gay and Catholic: Accepting My Sexuality, Finding Community, Living My Faith<\/a><\/em>. Jamison\u2019s book is a collection of fantastic essays (<a style=\"color: #27338d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.believermag.com\/issues\/201402\/?read=article_jamison\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">read the title one here<\/a>) that frequently touch on what it means to be embodied. Jamison narrates her experience playing a stand-in patient for doctors learning how to speak to patients, her visit to a conference for patients suffering from an allegedly psychosomatic disease, and being punched in the face.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Empathy Exams<\/em>\u00a0is a great spur to thought and conversation about how we relate to our bodies and those of others. Tushnet\u2019s book could be slotted under the same theme, but the most powerful parts of her book touched on the way we\u2019ve circumscribed\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0forms of intimacy (not just the physical\/romantic ones), restricting them to couplehood and leaving celibate queer people like Tushnet out in the cold. Tushnet\u2019s book is a handbook on ways to offer sacrificial love to others, especially when cultural scripts have failed you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/393605\/christmas-shopping-2014-nro-symposium\/page\/0\/2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Best of the Year at\u00a0<em>National Review<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">For a Christmas present that\u2019s also an investment in more-peaceable dinner-table conversation, try\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00CCGF81Q\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00CCGF81Q&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=SVBSM27D56EHHEKK\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Arnold Kling\u2019s<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0The Three Languages of Politics<\/span><\/em><\/a>. It\u2019s just over 50 pages, just shy of $2, and just the thing to give you an understanding of\u00a0<em>how<\/em>\u00a0an opponent can be so wrong. Kling is an adept interpreter of progressive, conservative, and libertarian inclinations and makes it easy to notice what good (real or mistaken) your enemy is pursuing, so you can start a productive debate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">If you like applying clarifying typologies to hot-button issues, it\u2019s always a good season to pick up\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0547599390\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0547599390&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=FWCMHE2YV4PAM7J2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">C. S. Lewis\u2019s\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Four Loves<\/span><\/em><\/a>, take a break from our sex-obsessed culture, and enter more deeply into friendship, neighborliness, and, yes, even the erotic, rightly understood.
