So, without further ado, here\u2019s what I\u2019m talking about this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>How to Make Americans Mourn for Monarchy?<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From\u00a0<em>Richard II<\/em>:<br>\n<blockquote><p>For God\u2019s sake, let us sit upon the ground<br>\nAnd tell sad stories of the death of kings;<br>\nHow some have been deposed; some slain in war,<br>\nSome haunted by the ghosts they have deposed;<br>\nSome poison\u2019d by their wives: some sleeping kill\u2019d;<br>\nAll murder\u2019d: for within the hollow crown<br>\nThat rounds the mortal temples of a king<br>\nKeeps Death his court<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2013\/01\/pulling-off-the-new-vulgarity.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Pulling off the New Vulgarity<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cAnd future ages groan for this foul act\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-american-interest.com\/2014\/09\/15\/the-art-of-argument\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Art of Argument<\/a> (<em>Arguendo\u00a0<\/em>review)<br>\n<blockquote><p>Instead of a conflict between prurience and puritanism, the audience has found itself in a pitched battle between order and entropy. The justices need to descend into hypothetical absurdities in order to guard against real ones, and can best wield their power by deploying as little of it as possible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>From\u00a0<em>Henry V<\/em>, on the method that his family came to the crown, before the battle of Agincourt:<br>\n<blockquote><p>Not to-day, O Lord,<br>\nO, not to-day, think not upon the fault<br>\nMy father made in compassing the crown!<br>\nI Richard\u2019s body have interred anew;<br>\nAnd on it have bestow\u2019d more contrite tears<br>\nThan from it issued forced drops of blood:<br>\nFive hundred poor I have in yearly pay,<br>\nWho twice a-day their wither\u2019d hands hold up<br>\nToward heaven, to pardon blood; and I have built<br>\nTwo chantries, where the sad and solemn priests<br>\nSing still for Richard\u2019s soul. More will I do;<br>\nThough all that I can do is nothing worth,<br>\nSince that my penitence comes after all,<br>\nImploring pardon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cI want to be in the room where it happens\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2014\/02\/the-joyless-house-of-cards\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Joyless\u00a0<em>House of Cards<\/em><\/a> (Seasons 1-2)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/act-four\/wp\/2015\/02\/27\/house-of-cards-insults-our-intelligence\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alyssa Rosenberg on season 3<\/a><br>\n<blockquote><p>the show is utterly uninterested in the people who are affected by policy changes that politicians pursue out of raw self-interest. The teachers affected by education reform proposals in the first season are an abstraction, represented by a thuggish union boss (Al Sapienza) \u2014 their students don\u2019t even merit a thought. When Peter Russo (Corey Stoll), a congressman Frank killed in the first season, showed concern for the shipworkers in his district, his sentiments came across as a sign of weakness.\u201cHouse of Cards\u201d shares Frank\u2019s contempt for actual citizens: From the second season on, they appear mostly as undifferentiated masses in protest scenes. When he announces his jobs plan, the set makes him look as though he\u2019s speaking from the void, into the void. This total disinterest in the actual impact of Frank\u2019s policies, the human cost of his governing rather than his political machinations, has the effect of buying into his approach to life: the one gets treated as much more important and interesting than the many.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>I mention\u00a0<em>Hamilton<\/em>, the hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton, in this segment. \u00a0Tickets for its Broadway run go on sale next Sunday \u2014 it is\u00a0<em>spectacular<\/em> and you should all go.<br>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lin-Manuel Miranda Performs at the White House Poetry Jam:  (8 of 8)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WNFf7nMIGnE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cO, swear not by the [Eucharist]\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0From\u00a0<em>Richard II<\/em>:<br>\n<blockquote><p>Thou fond mad woman,<br>\nWilt thou conceal this dark conspiracy?<br>\nA dozen of them here have ta\u2019en the sacrament,<br>\nAnd interchangeably set down their hands,<br>\nTo kill the king at Oxford.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>From <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1503261387\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1503261387&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=H5UKJ4INO3TVBY52\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dracula<\/a><\/em>:<br>\n<blockquote><p>As for Van Helsing, he was employed in a definite way. \u00a0First he took from his bag a mass of what looked like thin, wafer-like biscuit, which was carefully rolled up in a white napkin. \u00a0Next he took out a double handful of some whitish stuff, like dough or putty. \u00a0He crumbled the wafer up fine and worked it into the mass between his hands. \u00a0This he then took, and rolling it into thin strips, began to lay them into the crevices between the door and its setting in the tomb. \u00a0I was somewhat puzzled at this and being close, asked him what it was that he was doing\u2026He answered, \u201cI am closing the tomb so that the undead may not enter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that stuff you have there is going to do it\u2026. What is that which you are using?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Helsing reverently lifted his hat as he answered. \u00a0\u201cThe Host\u2026. I have an Indulgence.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, as a bonus for you guys following along on the blog, here\u2019s how I ran my all-day\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00DQN6IOK\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00DQN6IOK&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=V4CYAI44C7WEUGFN\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Hollow Crown<\/em><\/a> party. \u00a0People were told to arrive at 10am to eat and then start watching at 11a. \u00a0In actuality, we started at 11:30. \u00a0We finished exactly twelve hours later (I think\u2013I covered the clock on the TV, so that people wouldn\u2019t get antsy). \u00a0The movies run just under nine hours, and we took leisurely meal breaks (having learned my lesson from the time I tried to watch\u00a0<em>LotR<\/em> without any real pauses). \u00a0Here was the schedule:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Coffee, mimosas, and <a href=\"http:\/\/smittenkitchen.com\/blog\/2006\/12\/new-years-day-2001\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">baked french toast<\/a>\u00a0(sans booze, and with an extra egg (on my friend\u2019s recommendation)<\/li>\n<li><em>Richard II<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.101cookbooks.com\/archives\/avocado-asparagus-tartine-recipe.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Asparagus, Avocado, &amp; Arugula tartines<\/a><\/li>\n<li><em>Henry IV Part 1<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/smittenkitchen.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/gingerbread-biscotti\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gingerbread biscotti<\/a> (+ fruit salad that an attendee had brought)<\/li>\n<li><em>Henry IV Part 2<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.browneyedbaker.com\/butternut-squash-bacon-mac-n-cheese\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Butternut Squash Macaroni and Cheese<\/a> (sans the bacon)<\/li>\n<li><em>Henry V<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A very appropriate drink for a final toast (see below)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2015\/02\/hollow-crown-toast.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-11192\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2015\/02\/hollow-crown-toast.jpg\" alt=\"hollow crown toast\" width=\"401\" height=\"382\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now I\u2019m looking forward to the\u00a0<em>second<\/em> cycle and our next marathon in 2016 (<em>Henry VI pt 1, Henry VI pt 2, Henry VI pt 3,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Richard III<\/em>)<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You can listen to\u00a0\u201cFights in Good Faith,\u201d\u00a0my weekly radio program,\u00a0streaming today at 5pm ET and tomorrow (Sun) at 1pm. \u00a0The episode is now available to download and stream.
