There are three pieces of furniture intended to contain all these shoes, and then there are bins holding the run-off\u2014forty pairs is probably a conservative estimate. And at the center of this shoe-storing area, there is a repurposed vanity containing all the other \u201cHoney, I\u2019m Home\u201d objects, a dense tangle of keys and sunglasses and pieces of mail, bike locks and a roll of electrical tape.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m here, at the home of seven adults not related by blood and two children, to find out why one would choose to live somewhere that requires such an extreme shoe-storage situation. What does it look like, in an age of post-recession scarcity, for a group of people to successfully weather their late twenties and early thirties together, to embark on the great child-rearing mission in a shared home?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 3 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0<em>The Hedgehog Review<\/em>, Wendy Baucom profiles <a href=\"http:\/\/iasc-culture.org\/THR\/channels\/Common_Place\/2015\/03\/the-power-of-play-in-the-public-square\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a French plaza that has turned itself into a public space that welcomes families and lets them mingle with their neighbors<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #464646;\">People of all ages and classes congregate in the square. I believe it\u2019s critical that there is no cost to play.\u00a0Some users could afford a day trip to a museum, while others have very few toys in their own homes. Moreover, the nature of play makes it easy for cultures and nationalities to mingle. Chinese and Senegalese Parisians may shop in different grocery stores, but here they play the same games, regardless of their language proficiency. As my non-French-speaking son can attest, language is seldom a barrier when there\u2019s a great game in progress. Other, perhaps more insurmountable barriers, like politics or religion, may be set aside by adults in need of a chess partner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #464646;\">I don\u2019t want to overstate what happens at the games kiosk. Without it, the square will still be criss-crossed by thousands daily, a few of whom will sit at the park benches or order at the cafe. But the presence of toys and games changes the character of the space. Suddenly it welcomes families, and friends of families; it speaks to our love of play and recreation. We\u2019re not just using this space, we\u2019re enjoying it. There is a huge benefit to introducing a palpable measure of regular happiness to the environment we already inhabit. Such feelings are a key element in neighborhood pride.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 4 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Introductions and new connections are facilitated by public spaces, though there\u2019s still always room for professional pair-ers. \u00a0Speaking of which, the\u00a0<em>NYT<\/em>\u00a0recently had a very amusing correction at the bottom of an article titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/15\/style\/for-nice-jewish-guys-swipe-right.html?_r=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cFor Nice Jewish Guys, Swipe Right\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An earlier version of this article and its accompanying headline incorrectly compared JSwipe users to yentas. Yentas are busybodies, not matchmakers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yenta may not\u00a0<em>technically<\/em> mean matchmaker, but surely any good matchmaker\u00a0<em>is<\/em> a yenta. \u00a0Look no further than Chuck Schumer for an example, who the\u00a0<em>NYT<\/em> called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/18\/nyregion\/senator-senator-make-me-a-match-for-staff-schumer-is-cupid.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Yenta of the Senate\u201d<\/a>\u00a0(and the article in which that appeared <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/18\/nyregion\/senator-senator-make-me-a-match-for-staff-schumer-is-cupid.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cSenator, Senator, Make Me a Match\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is just as fun to read as you\u2019d expect).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the holdup?\u201d the senator asks couples who are dillydallying on an engagement. \u201cDid you get a ring yet?\u201d Other could-be-marrieds receive a simple instruction: \u201cGet moving!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would just keep saying, \u2018Let\u2019s go already,\u2019 \u201d recalled Sean Sweeney, a top Democratic strategist who began dating the woman who would become his wife when they were on Mr. Schumer\u2019s staff in 1999. When he proposed, the senator reacted \u201clike a sportscaster,\u201d Mr. Sweeney said. \u201c \u2018Goooooal!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The encouragement rarely stops at the altar. Mr. Schumer is described by aides as a fabulous wedding guest, quick to request a Jefferson Starship song from the D.J. and eager to dance with the bride. And his focus, like many a politician\u2019s, never strays far from his legacy: first comes Schumer Marriage, then come Schumer Babies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave kids; have a lot of kids,\u201d Mr. Schumer, who has two daughters, is known to intone. \u201cStart early and keep having them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I strongly recommend reading the piece aloud, because it\u2019s a pleasure (and taking a job in Schumer\u2019s office if you\u2019re having trouble finding a fianc\u00e9(e)).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 5 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also on the subject of pairing, Emmy Noether\u2019s birthday was this week, and <a href=\"http:\/\/freelanceastrophysicist.com\/2011\/11\/getting-nothing-for-something-and-vice-versa\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this article on Freelance Astrophysicist was my favorite thing I read on her and her insights into symmetry\/physics<\/a>. \u00a0I\u2019m pulling only one paragraph below, but you may need to read the (short, layperson-friendly, enthused) essay to make it make sense:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, finally, how can the laws of physics have continuous symmetries? Well, for example, the laws of physics look the same no matter\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000;\">where<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0you are. Newton\u2019s second law of motion, Maxwell\u2019s laws, the Schr\u00f6dinger equation \u2014 they all look exactly the same whether you\u2019re in Detroit or Dar-es-Salaam. So that\u2019s a continuous symmetry of the laws of physics, and by Noether\u2019s theorem, that symmetry leads directly to the conservation of momentum.
