{"id":11537,"date":"2015-06-12T13:44:43","date_gmt":"2015-06-12T17:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=11537"},"modified":"2015-06-12T13:44:43","modified_gmt":"2015-06-12T17:44:43","slug":"7qt-how-composing-covers-and-costumes-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2015\/06\/7qt-how-composing-covers-and-costumes-work.html","title":{"rendered":"7QT: How Composing, Covers, and Costumes Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conversiondiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/7_quick_takes_sm1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1387\" title=\"7_quick_takes_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conversiondiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/7_quick_takes_sm1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"195\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 1 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hi folks! \u00a0Did you want to read a novella-length article on how software development works? \u00a0I thought you might!<\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed the\u00a0<em>heck<\/em> out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2015-paul-ford-what-is-code\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Paul Ford\u2019s \u201cWhat is Code?\u201d for Bloomberg Businessweek<\/a> (and it\u2019s one of only a couple articles I can think of that makes excellent use of being on the web\u2013letting you play around with little snippets of example code, animations, etc). \u00a0I\u2019d say check it out and see if you wind up enjoying it!<\/p>\n<p>(Because I have a little background on this, I\u2019m not\u00a0<em>certain<\/em> it\u2019s layperson friendly, but it\u2019s certainly intending to be, and it helped me understand the concepts in it that I hadn\u2019t seen before)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 2 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019d like a\u00a0<em>much<\/em> shorter tour through a technical topic, I also recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/darwincatholic.blogspot.com\/2015\/06\/small-groups-are-more-likely-to-excel.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">DarwinCatholic\u2019s post \u201cSmall Groups Are More Likely to Excel, and That Means Nothing.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 It\u2019s a great explanation of why you\u2019d\u00a0<em>expect<\/em> small schools to wind up at the top of the rankings, even if they\u2019re not\u00a0<em>really<\/em> any better than large schools. \u00a0He did a great job making some visualizations that let you get the point intuitively, rather than burning too much effort on text.<\/p>\n<p>I was really pleased and have been sharing it around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 3 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of The Way Things Work\u2026. I was so happy when a friend of mine sent me this video of Jason Robert Brown giving a speech in honor of Stephen Sondheim.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8rp6CWcs2j8\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8rp6CWcs2j8<\/a>\n<p>I mean, I\u2019m always happy to hear people praise Sondheim, but what\u2019s particularly great about this video is that Jason Robert Brown is also a composer and can talk me through some of the mechanics of what\u2019s brilliant about Sondheim\u2019s work. \u00a0I\u2019ve sung <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4ISZhGbvBBI\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cGood Thing Going\u201d<\/a> with my voice teacher and I\u00a0<em>still<\/em> was unaware of what Sondheim is doing in the accompaniment to shape what the progression of the piece feels like.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got pretty much no background in music theory, so I really appreciate it when someone walks me through\u00a0<em>how<\/em> a composer has had such an effect on me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 4 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still in the vein of\u00a0<em>how<\/em>\u00a0artists ply their craft, I enjoyed <a href=\"http:\/\/craigmod.com\/journal\/hack_the_cover\/?src=longreads\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this essay on book cover design<\/a> (including in a age of ebooks) a lot.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Seth Godin\u2019s Domino publishing imprint embraces and codifies the diminishing cover.<\/p>\n<p>The first Domino book,\u00a0<em>Poke the Box<\/em>, has no words on the cover, just a line drawing of an excited man. To which Mr. Godin explains to readers confused by the lack of words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWho needs them? When you see the book online, it\u2019s always accompanied by lots of text. You read the text on the screen, the cover is the icon.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is an ethos embracing book covers in the context of an Amazon.com sales page.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 5 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, in the how-craft-works genre, I liked <a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/blog\/apple-watch-shows-the-benefits-of-engineering-perfectionand-of-flaws\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this piece from\u00a0<em>Nautilus<\/em> on the kinds of imperfections and impurities that make materials stronger<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">The act of applying mechanical force to metals not only causes existing dislocations to move\u2014it also causes new dislocations to sprout in the metal. The new dislocations run into and interfere with each other, and anything that gets in the way of the movement of dislocations (including other dislocations) makes the metal harder. Bending metal to get this effect is called\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"color: #222222;\">work hardening<\/i><span style=\"color: #222222;\">, and you can feel it yourself by unfolding a paperclip and then bending it back and forth at a single point\u2014it will be easy at first, but then will get more difficult as more and more dislocations appear and interact with each other. Because the dislocations are lines that are effectively only one atom thick, that bent-up paperclip can include hundreds of feet\/meters of dislocations, in much the same way that the nucleus of a human cell, only about 6 micrometers in diameter, contains strings of DNA that are nearly six feet (two meters) long when uncoiled.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 6 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1594715874\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1594715874&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkId=UQSPEYFK3B36HIBC\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Arriving at Amen: Seven Catholic Prayers that Even I Can Offer<\/em><\/a> has been out for a month, my friends have been joshing me about what I could do for a follow-up. \u00a0This was\u00a0<em>definitely<\/em> the best suggestion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Ms. Libresco\u2019s new book a freak bolt of lightening during the climatic confrontation between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/12\/the-inspector-javert-medley-sequence-index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Jean-Valjean and Javert<\/a> send the two hurtling forward in time and onto the campus of modern day Yale. When Valjean becomes a star <a href=\"http:\/\/theypu.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">YPU<\/a> member Javert decides to also join the debate team, hoping to force Valjean to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/08\/didnt-you-ever-break-on-the-floor.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">break on the floor<\/a> and confess to his crimes. But can Javert\u2019s rigid moral code hold up to hours of debate and epistemological scrutiny?
