If you\u2019re in the market for birthday presents generally, you might be interested in this kickstarter for wearable, programmable jewelry<\/a>, which is a nice gateway drug for Arduinos.<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\nIt\u2019s great to be able to get into electronics without starting with soldering. \u00a0I was really glad to be able to use sewable boards when I put together my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Accelerometer-Controlled-Light-Gauntlets\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">LED, accelerometer-controlled gauntlets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 3 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nAlso from the annals of the inventive, I was surprised to learn that there were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2015\/07\/20\/the-surprising-history-of-the-catholic-churchs-circus-priests\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">priests who travelled with circuses<\/a>, to minister to performers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nLike North, Cancro has a long circus history, too: Forty-five years ago, before he even attended seminary, Cancro went to the Ringling brothers\u2019 clown school.<\/p>\n\u201cMy priesthood,\u201d he said, \u201cwent on without any real connection to circus\u201d \u2014 until one day in 2010, when Fabritze showed up at his office and saw a photograph of a clown on his wall.<\/p>\n\u201cShe wanted to know who it was, and I said it was me,\u201d Cancro said. \u201cAnd then I had to tell her my background.\u201d<\/p>\nHe sighed. \u201cNext thing I know, I have a call from the Bishop\u2019s Conference to show up at this meeting the following January to become part of the circus and traveling people\u2019s ministry.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 4 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nBut I was even more surprised to find out that India and Bangladesh have such a cockamamie border that they are jointly responsible for the world\u2019s only third order enclave \u2013 a bit of India completely surrounded by Bangladeshi land, which is itself inside an Indian enclave which is within Bangladesh. \u00a0The Economist explains <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/economist-explains\/2015\/06\/economist-explains-19\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">how this all came to be<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n(And then you might want to also fall down the Wikipedia well by reading <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_enclaves_and_exclaves\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the article on enclaves<\/a>, like I did)<\/p>\n<a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 5 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nSpeaking of sorting out boundaries, Will Duquette has some interesting thoughts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/crywoof\/2015\/06\/dominicans-everywhere-or-is-it-time-for-a-new-level-to-the-hierarchy\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">whether the Catholic Church should separate out the preaching and sacramental roles of priests<\/a> a little more, so that some parts of priestly duties can be done without lengthy graduate study:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nToday we expect our priests to be Chief Executives of the parish; the buck stops on their desk.\u00a0 We expect them to visit the sick, and administer the sacraments, and preach the gospels, and run the parish, and be our liaison with the bishop, and all manner of things.\u00a0 Perhaps our priests need \u201cauxiliary priests\u201d to help them out: men ordained from among those in the parish to administer the sacraments, but without an explicit teaching role except as delegated by the pastor.<\/p>\nI would expect such auxiliary priests to be self-supporting, having a day job or living in retirement, as many deacons do; to be disciples of Jesus; to have a practical\u00a0layman\u2019s education in theology and Christian living; and to serve at the altar and hear confessions as deacons cannot.\u00a0 Auxiliary priests would owe obedience to the bishop through their pastor, who would be responsible for overseeing their work. \u00a0They would probably have a continuing education requirement, so that their deepest study would come\u00a0after<\/em>\u00a0their ordination rather than before it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 6 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nThere\u2019s an amazing story at Medium about a former heroin addict who <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/backchannel\/the-heroin-heroine-of-reddit-a2fffcc2a25b?Src=longreads\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mails clean needles and medication for treating overdose to any drug user who asks for them<\/a>. \u00a0Her work has saved an estimated 115 lives.<\/p>\n<a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 7 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nFinally, you kinda know any story involving Oliver Sacks is going to be good, but this story about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themorningnews.org\/article\/my-letter-from-oliver-sacks\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">studying stereoscopic vision and writing to Sacks<\/a> for his thoughts still exceeded my expectations.
