Over at FiveThirtyEight, I\u2019ve rounded up Catholic nerds and data nerds to try to answer the question\u00a0\u201cHow can you tell if Francis (or any other Pope) is a success?\u201d<\/a> \u00a0I actually made a bet with a friend on the success of Francis\u2019s papacy not long after he became pontiff (and the bet comes due in 2016); it was pretty hard to find something to measure. \u00a0I promise you that what we went with wasn\u2019t this, though:<\/p>\n

PEG:<\/b>\u00a0I think before you even think of metrics, you have to think about what criteria constitute success. In the church\u2019s self-understanding, it\u2019s a machine for producing saints. Well, the results are only going to be in a few centuries from now.<\/p>\n

Leah:<\/b>\u00a0I thought of doing a generational bet, which my friend and I would pass down to our children, to check on canonization rates of people alive during Francis\u2019s papacy, but (a) it seemed to be vulnerable to changing attitudes about canonizations (witness Pope John Paul II\u00a0canonizing<\/a>\u00a0a record-setting 480-plus saints) and (b) no fun for us.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sam Sawyer, SJ, an associate editor at\u00a0America<\/a>; Mark Oppenheimer, who writes the\u00a0Beliefs<\/a>\u00a0column for The New York Times;<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Carl Bialik<\/a>, the lead writer for news at FiveThirtyEight joined me to figure out what we\u2019d like to measure and what we\u00a0can<\/em> measure when we\u2019re assessing a pope.<\/p>\n
