Octavia Spencer)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VpTf1GFjCd8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 2 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of unexpected good works, I found it really interesting to read through <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.org\/2015\/10\/15\/charities-wed-like-to-see\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">GiveWell\u2019s list of non-existent charities<\/a> that they\u2019d like people to found so that they can fund them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Charities that implement GiveWell\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #295a8a;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.givewell.org\/international\/technical\/programs\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">priority programs<\/a><\/strong>: vitamin A supplementation, immunizations, conditional cash transfers, micronutrient fortification, or even bednets and deworming (since our top charities that focus on the latter two have limited room for more funding).\u00a0<a style=\"color: #295a8a;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.org\/2015\/10\/15\/charities-wed-like-to-see\/#Sec1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">More<\/a><br>\n<strong>Charities implementing potential priority programs that are particularly challenging<\/strong>, particularly those revolving around (a) treatment of treatable conditions in a hospital or clinic setting; (b) behavior change for improving health. We see several hurdles to successfully focusing on such programs, but would be excited to see charities that overcome such hurdles.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #295a8a;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.org\/2015\/10\/15\/charities-wed-like-to-see\/#Sec2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">More<\/a><br>\n<strong>Charities that collect or generate information and data relevant to our recommendations<\/strong>. Currently, we recommend charities based partly on the data they themselves collect and share. But we could potentially recommend an organization that does not, itself, collect and share strong monitoring data, if we had independent data showing its activities\u2019 effectiveness.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #295a8a;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.org\/2015\/10\/15\/charities-wed-like-to-see\/#Sec3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">More<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They have a lot more details at the link.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 3 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GiveWell does a great job looking not only at what we know now, but at what we\u2019d need to learn more about charity effectiveness. \u00a0Also in the vein of good epistemological practices, I liked <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelblume.tumblr.com\/post\/131320180527\/untiltheseashallfreethem-so-im-taing-an\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this homework assignment<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #4c4c4c;\">So, I\u2019m TAing an undergrad algorithms class, and this week they have a homework on dynamic programming.\u00a0 And the first question is interesting, because it gives them a dynamic programming problem and asks them to find the solution, but it also gives them some algorithms that don\u2019t work, and asks them to find counterexamples.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4c4c4c;\">And this strikes me as a really useful homework problem, because the art of finding counterexamples is essential to writing algorithms; it\u2019s how you tell whether your algorithm actually works. \u00a0(I mean, you can try proving it formally, and if the proof doesn\u2019t work, that can help you find flaws in your algorithm. \u00a0But it\u2019s often much faster to think of a counterexample.) \u00a0I remember that my undergrad algorithms professor was really good at finding counterexamples, and I was sort of awed by his ability to do so. \u00a0But prior to this homework problem, I don\u2019t think I\u2019d ever seen anyone explicitly acknowledge counterexample-finding as a skill that needed to be practiced.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>(found <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelblume.tumblr.com\/post\/131320180527\/untiltheseashallfreethem-so-im-taing-an\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">via Mike Blume\u2019s tumblr<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 4 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the annals of very clever engineering: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/13\/arts\/design\/developing-dna-as-a-standard-for-authenticating-art.html?ref=todayspaper&amp;_r=0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Using synthetic DNA to authenticate paintings!<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"263\" data-total-count=\"2349\">The new approach, in its formative stage, would implant synthetic DNA, not the personal DNA of the artists, because of privacy issues and because a person\u2019s DNA could conceivably be stolen and embedded, thus undermining the authority of such a marking protocol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2667\">The developers said the bioengineered DNA would be unique to each item and provide an encrypted link between the art and a database that would hold the consensus of authoritative information about the work.
