You can get anywhere in the dark-pink section in the middle within five days \u2013 to the Azores in the west and the Russian city of Perm in the east. No surprises there: you\u2019re just not going very far. Beyond that, things get a little more interesting. Within five to ten days, you can get as far as Winnipeg or the Blue Pearl of Siberia, Lake Baikal. It takes as much as 20 days to get to Tashkent, which is closer than either, or Honolulu, which is much farther away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 4 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d never heard of \u201clong eggs\u201d so I\u2019d never stopped to wonder how they were made, but this video of a long egg factory was mesmerizing. (Not in English, but don\u2019t let that stop you).<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Long Egg Production\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZYz2DLN9uik?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 5 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Long eggs are kind of intrinsically ridiculous, but looking under the hood of even more noble ideas can still be a little amusing. The National Archives in DC is doing an exhibit on proposed constitutional amendments, and this is my favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/weve-tried-to-amend-the-constitution-11000-times-and-not-all-the-proposals-were-good\/2016\/03\/08\/58bcb3d8-e555-11e5-bc08-3e03a5b41910_story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">of the somewhat absurd ones<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Another failed proposal, in 1846, called for presidential election via a lottery system.<\/p>\n<p>It called for each state to select its own presidential candidate. Then the name of each state would be written on balls equal to the number of congressmen from that state.<\/p>\n<p>One ball would be picked at random, and the candidate from that state would become president. The vice president would be selected the same way.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you wish you could pay restaurant bills in roughly this manner, <a href=\"http:\/\/messymatters.com\/expectorant\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">there\u2019s an app for that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 6 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got one more \u201chow things are made\u201d link in the last slot, but first,\u00a0<em>Nautilus<\/em> has a neat history of <a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/blog\/the-most-important-object-in-computer-graphics-history-is-this-teapot\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a virtual teapot that marked a turning point in computer graphics design<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The teapot quickly became a beloved staple of the graphics community. Teapot after teapot graced the pages and covers of computer graphics journals.\u00a0 \u201cAnyone with a new idea about rendering and lighting would announce it by first trying it out on a teapot,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=WOwyRnZ1oxoC&amp;lpg=PA66&amp;vq=teapot&amp;pg=PA66#v=snippet&amp;q=teapot&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">writes<\/a> animator Tom Sito in <i>Moving Innovation.\u00a0<\/i>\u201cWe saw the teapot rendered as if made of alabaster, red brick, leopard skin, and animal fur.\u201d\u00a0Most famously, a <a href=\"http:\/\/artis.imag.fr\/~Cyril.Soler\/DEA\/Ombres\/Papers\/Arvo.Sig87.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">1987 paper<\/a> introduced an image casually described as the five Platonic solids plus the \u201cnewly discovered Teapotahedron.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 7 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Did you mean to spend a half hour of your weekend watching Adam Savage build a Hellboy sword replica? Because I\u2019m awfully glad that\u00a0<em>I<\/em> did, and, to be honest, I had more fun watching this than a goodly number of tv shows.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Adam Savage&#039;s One Day Builds: Hellboy Sword!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gcDCZ2TmTck?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
