{"id":138,"date":"2011-05-17T16:02:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T16:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2011\/05\/no-victimless-sins\/"},"modified":"2012-10-04T11:17:38","modified_gmt":"2012-10-04T15:17:38","slug":"no-victimless-sins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2011\/05\/no-victimless-sins.html","title":{"rendered":"No Victimless Sins?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-x3lyMKLP8vg\/TdLTYmgibkI\/AAAAAAAABZo\/PfR1IFtBU9M\/s1600\/medium_Emperor-Palpatine.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-x3lyMKLP8vg\/TdLTYmgibkI\/AAAAAAAABZo\/PfR1IFtBU9M\/s320\/medium_Emperor-Palpatine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"230\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>When I wrote\u00a0about my dilemma on how to deal with an Orthodox Jewish girl trying to keep the Sabbath in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unequally-yoked.com\/2011\/05\/duty-to-disclose.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Duty to Disclose?<\/a>\u201d earlier this week, I was trying to use the post to build up to a bigger question that I\u2019ve been wrestling with. \u00a0I felt like I had seriously erred when I behaved spitefully, even though the target of my ire was not aware of my nastiness, and I didn\u2019t believe she would come to any real harm as the result of my actions.<\/p>\n<p>After I wrote a post about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unequally-yoked.com\/2011\/05\/rejoice-not-when-thine-enemy-falleth.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christian ideal of radical forgiveness in the wake of Osama bin Laden\u2019s death<\/a>, a friend asked whether I could think of any circumstances in which hate was not harmful. \u00a0In a longer discussion, another friends wanted to know why I thought there was something wrong. \u00a0He wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u2019m going to come at this from a weird angle: I sort of understand the sadness against violence, but I\u2019ve never really understood your reaction about hatred. I\u2019m not too sure why there is something less virtuous (in a non-christian sense) about deriving motivation and energy for hate? Is it simply from the corrupting influence that it can lead you to violence?<\/p>\n<p>My general question is more of why should I not want to hate? I feel I\u2019ve talked to you about this in the past, where I think it\u2019s more than just okay to be fueled by \u2018negative\u2019 emotions<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I promised a longer response here, but I\u2019ve been spinning my wheels a little. \u00a0The trouble is, it feels so obviously <em>wrong<\/em> to me to give oneself over to hate in any circumstances that I\u2019m having trouble explaining it to the people who disagree with me. \u00a0I\u2019d love to draw on your perspectives and kick this around in the comments section before writing a full post.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t think there\u2019s something wrong with \u2018negative emotions,\u2019 tell me a little about why. \u00a0If you\u2019re closer to my side of this argument, help me muster compelling arguments. \u00a0If you want a bit more to go on, here\u2019s the thought experiment\/edge case I\u2019ve been turning over:<\/p>\n<p><em>Is it a problem if I hate dead people or fictional people? \u00a0In either case, my ability to harm the target is\u00a0suppressed\u00a0(hate producing negative consequences) and it\u2019s beyond my ability to help heal them (hate preventing positive consequences).
