This is not a hypothetical question. \u00a0I got into a conversation with religion with my ASL tutor (she\u2019s running a Christian ministry for the Deaf in DC) and I had to do a lot of fingerspelling to explain why I don\u2019t believe in any gods. \u00a0My teacher suggested that I make a list of words I really need, and she\u2019ll teach them to me next week and we\u2019ll continue the conversation.<\/p>\n

What words\/concepts would you suggest I put on the list? \u00a0Some of the ones I picked up this week: evidence, hypothesis, believe, god, faith, explain, tweak. \u00a0Still looking for \u2018contingent,\u2019 \u2018morality,\u2019 and some others that my teacher is already planning to track down.<\/p>\n

Having to work within my limited ASL vocabulary was a pretty good exercise in trying to explain my atheism simply and briefly. \u00a0Here\u2019s the best distillation I managed to sign:<\/p>\n

A hypothesis can\u2019t just name the thing I don\u2019t understand. \u00a0It has to teach me something new and true. \u00a0So when I don\u2019t know something, I just say I don\u2019t know.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
I also managed to sign \u201cBeliefs need to pay rent<\/a>\u201d but that came at the end of summarizing that Yudkowsky essay, which was hard. \u00a0What words do I need to put on my religious argument cheat guide?<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>P.S. In case anyone is interested, the ASL word for \u2018Christian\u2019 is a compound of the sign for \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeprint.com\/asl101\/pages-signs\/j\/jesus.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus<\/a>\u2018 followed by the \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeprint.com\/asl101\/pages-layout\/agentaffix.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">agent affix<\/a>.\u2019 \u00a0She doesn\u2019t know a sign for \u2018atheist\u2019 and I didn\u2019t find one in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aslpro.com\/cgi-bin\/aslpro\/aslpro.cgi\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ASLpro\u2019s religious dictionary<\/a>, either.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026which ones would you pick?
