About.com is accepting nominations for their Reader\u2019s Choice Awards, and there is a category for Favorite Atheist Blog<\/a>. \u00a0I don\u2019t much fancy my chances against the behemoth that is Freethought Blogs<\/a>, but I\u2019d be thrilled to make the finals.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s winner was P.Z. Myers\u2019s\u00a0 Pharyngula<\/a>, which has a very different style and goal than Unequally Yoked. \u00a0Some atheist blogs speak mainly to people who are already atheists. \u00a0That\u2019s an incredibly valuable service; it\u2019s a way to promote activism, aggregate news, and provide a safe space for people who may have been thrown out of their families and communities because of their views.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going for something a little different here. \u00a0This blog is meant to be a place for productive arguments and strange alliances between atheists and theists. \u00a0In these comment threads, I can make common cause with a gnostic Christian while the atheists and Catholics have to team up to call him a heretic and me a lunatic [in the most\u00a0respectful\u00a0possible way]. \u00a0And all of us are expected to defend the beliefs we hold, not just attack the beliefs we\u2019ve rejected.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t want every atheist blog to hew to this model, but I\u2019d be very pleased to have it represented in the finals, so, if you want, please nominate it at the About site<\/a> (link closes February 15th).<\/p>\n
