{"id":197,"date":"2011-03-10T00:52:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T00:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2011\/03\/fast-and-loose-with-family-facts\/"},"modified":"2012-09-24T17:26:03","modified_gmt":"2012-09-24T21:26:03","slug":"fast-and-loose-with-family-facts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2011\/03\/fast-and-loose-with-family-facts.html","title":{"rendered":"Fast and Loose with Family Facts"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>First Things has started a new online feature I enjoy called \u201cFamily Facts.\u201d The series is described as \u201can occasional series of data presentations about family and religious practice and analysis of their role in maintaining civil society.\u201d \u00a0Given how much I love data and data visualization, I\u2019m delighted.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not so delighted with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/blogs\/firstthoughts\/2011\/03\/10\/family-facts-3\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the most recent installment<\/a> on who children live with. \u00a0Here\u2019s the chart:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-u1TQXn8TnSI\/TXj9hPI-gTI\/AAAAAAAABTw\/spQ1nqm9_tE\/s1600\/family+facts.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-u1TQXn8TnSI\/TXj9hPI-gTI\/AAAAAAAABTw\/spQ1nqm9_tE\/s400\/family+facts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"313\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>See that note on the side, where it says \u201cFigures for 1961 to 1967 have been interpolated\u2019? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interpolation\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Interpolation<\/a> is what you do when you are missing data. \u00a0There are a lot of different procedures, but the most common, and the one I suspect they\u2019re using here, is plotting the points you <em>do <\/em>have (1960 and 1968) and just connecting them with a line. \u00a0This gives the impression that any change between these two points was steady, when, in fact, the data may have bounced around a bit.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a little sloppy and, in this example, it\u2019s <em>entirely\u00a0unnecessary<\/em>. \u00a0Here\u2019s an easy fix: start the chart in 1968, the point when you start having year by year data. \u00a0I assume they wanted to tack on the 1960 data to give the impression of stability prior to the countercultural movements, but they could still make that case with a better graph. \u00a0Technically, moving up the date might make some readers a little suspicious about why they put the cut point there, but they could add a footnote that year by year data was only available starting in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>And frankly, I\u2019m suspicious about the cut point <em>now<\/em>. \u00a0Where did that\u00a0solitary\u00a01960 datapoint come from?
