{"id":2074,"date":"2012-03-02T12:46:23","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T17:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=2074"},"modified":"2012-12-09T22:28:41","modified_gmt":"2012-12-10T03:28:41","slug":"epistemology-thought-experiment-on-prime-time-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/03\/epistemology-thought-experiment-on-prime-time-tv.html","title":{"rendered":"Epistemology Thought Experiment on Prime Time TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><em>Remember you can vote once per day for the About.com Atheism Awards. \u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/atheism.about.com\/b\/2012\/02\/22\/favorite-agnostic-atheist-blog-of-2011.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">one of five nominees for Best Atheist Blog<\/a>. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/02\/its-an-honor-just-to-be-nominated.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">More details here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbc.com\/awake\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Awake tv show\" src=\"https:\/\/img.poptower.com\/pic-53333\/awake-nbc-tv-show.jpg?d=600\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"243\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last night I caught the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/watch\/330135\/awake-pilot\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">series premiere of <em>Awake<\/em> on Hulu<\/a> and I found it captivating. \u00a0The basic setup: Detective Michael Britten (played by Jason Isaacs \u2014 Lucius Malfoy) is in a terrible car accident. \u00a0After the crash his life bifurcates. \u00a0In one reality, his wife died in the crash. \u00a0In the other, he lost his son. \u00a0He lives a full day in one world, goes to bed, closes his eyes, and wakes up in the alternate world. \u00a0Again and again and again.<\/p>\n<p>The show doesn\u2019t nail down whether Britten is experiencing something supernatural or if his grief has made him delusional and one set of experiences is false. \u00a0In each world, he\u2019s seeing a different psychiatrist. \u00a0Both of them are trying to convince him that the other shrink is wrong to to tell him to accept the other world as true. \u00a0Meanwhile, the crimes Britten investigates in each world seem to be entangled.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Awake - Season 01 Promo\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_7ywHHfTDAw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>In the pilot, each doctor tries to come up with ways tests that differentiate between reality and illusion. \u00a0One of the psychiatrists (played by B.D. Wong) is much more aggressive than his counterpart. \u00a0This proves he is real, he argues. \u00a0The other doctor appears more passive because she\u2019s just part of Britten\u2019s subconscious. \u00a0When Britten confronts his other doctor with this argument, she says that Wong is the illusion \u2014 he matches Britten\u2019s expectation for what\u00a0psychiatry\u00a0<em>should<\/em> feel like.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m really excited to see how this show develops and what kind evidence Britten will decides counts as persuasive. \u00a0On this blog, I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how you decide between two contradictory worldviews that both line up pretty well with the evidence you\u2019ve got on hand. \u00a0I\u2019ll keep watching this show and I\u2019ll let you know if it comes up with any heuristics that seem useful outside this particular context.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/03\/redblue_pill.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2078\" title=\"redblue_pill\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/03\/redblue_pill.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"202\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I\u2019ve not done too well in coming up with a way to spot that I\u2019ve dreaming. \u00a0Although I\u2019ve heard you can\u2019t read in dreams, I\u2019ve certainly believed I was reading new stories in some of mine. \u00a0Other times, I\u2019ve tried to do something unusual in the hopes that other people\u2019s\u00a0anomalous\u00a0reactions would confirm I was dreaming. \u00a0[Unfortunately, in that particular dream, I tried kissing someone, and everyone\u2019s horrified reactions convinced me I wasn\u2019t dreaming, so when I finally woke up, it was from a nightmare].<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I ended up practising ASL in my dream, and the signs seemed to be accurate, but I couldn\u2019t fingerspell at all; I knew I wasn\u2019t actually making the letter-signs. \u00a0I\u2019ll have to pay attention and see if I can use that as a test. \u00a0Pretty much the only in-dream giveaways I know work now are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I turn out to be naked<\/li>\n<li>I can\u2019t remember what happened before what\u2019s currently happening (I have to already be suspicious to even think of this one)<\/li>\n<li>Lord Voldemort makes an appearance (This one doesn\u2019t work very well, as I tend not to look a gift adventure in the mouth while I\u2019m dreaming)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anything work for you?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember you can vote once per day for the About.com Atheism Awards. \u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0one of five nominees for Best Atheist Blog. \u00a0More details here.
