Shawn Carey, Contributor to the Clear Signing for the New Roman Missal ASL Project\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JsKNqYWCf0k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Watching the interpreter in my local parish, I noticed he was usually signing with the syntax of spoken English, so I assumed there wasn\u2019t a full translation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 4 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The video below should give you a pretty decent idea about the difference between the syntax of real ASL and what\u2019s sometimes called Simple Signed English (SEE) or English on the hands. \u00a0Ally is signing a translation of the song in the full screen and translating word-by-word in the inset screen.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Do I&quot; in ASL (and SEE\/English SL\/PSE)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eRZLn3CeqKY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 5 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sign language is a full language that encodes meaning spatially, instead of aurally. \u00a0Because I\u2019m such a math nerd, I really geek out about cool uses of spatial reasoning. \u00a0Needless to say, I was delighted to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2012\/04\/06\/arts\/music\/the-connection-between-gesture-and-music.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>NYT<\/em>\u2018s visualization of orchestral conductors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 6 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I may have mentioned how much I\u2019ve enjoyed the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.udacity.com\/overview\/Course\/cs101\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Building a Search Engine<\/a>\u201d programming class I\u2019ve been taking from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.udacity.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Udacity<\/a>. \u00a0Registration is open now for their next cycle of classes (the most basic of which requires no previous programming experience). \u00a0I really recommend them and I\u2019m glad to answer any specific questions in the comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 7 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That wraps up the quick takes for this week.
