Channel<\/a>\u2018 pages (previously \u2018Portals\u2019) for the different religious groups on the site. \u00a0The old portal was kind of a placeholder, and they were holding off on major updates til the redesign. \u00a0One question that came up in consultations with bloggers before the rollout was whether our section should be under the heading \u201cAtheist\u201d or \u201cHumanist.\u201d \u00a0It used to be \u201cHumanist\u201d and I\u2019m quite glad we switched the names.<\/p>\nHumanist is a pretty vague word. \u00a0To me, it just suggests to me an interest in human nature and human purpose and it doesn\u2019t necessarily preclude a belief in the spiritual or supernatural. \u00a0Note that a lot of people in the atheist community feel the need to insert the word \u2018secular\u2019 before humanist when they use it to refer to themselves.<\/p>\n
Another personal frustration with \u2018humanism\u2019: it sounds like it\u2019s got more of a creed attached to it than \u2018atheism\u2019 (which is just the absence of theism), but humanism tends to be very vaguely and variably defined. \u00a0I\u2019d rather take diffuse definitions like \u2018humanist\u2019 off the table, so people can\u2019t avoid getting their feet held to the fire during debates. Atheists are often (and fairly) asked to talk about what they do believe, instead of just talking about what they reject. Humanists have a tendency to confuse their interlocutors, who can\u2019t remember whether there\u2019s any there there.<\/p>\n
