font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 3 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, as you can tell, I\u2019m pretty cool, but this guy who <a href=\"http:\/\/saipancakes.blogspot.com\/2012\/04\/fractals.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">makes fractal pancakes<\/a> is way cooler.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"fractal pancakes\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-DIU4wNe0EpY\/T6DHvL3l0lI\/AAAAAAAAWps\/utau6yOyKt0\/02-Desktop3%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" alt=\"\" width=\"483\" height=\"483\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 4 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The internet has made it easy to put hire humans for weird tasks, and I love the way Matt Richardson has put this to use. \u00a0He\u2019s created what he calls a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/mattrichardson.com\/Descriptive-Camera\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">descriptive camera<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0Instead of recording an image, it outputs a text description of the scene you just shot. \u00a0He\u2019s using Amazon\u2019s Mechanical Turk program to farm out the work. \u00a0Humans\u00a0receive\u00a0the image and type up a description, which the camera then prints out. \u00a0Here\u2019s one \u2018descriptive image\u2019 generated so far:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Looks like a cupboard which is ugly and old having name plates on it with a study lamp attached to it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 5 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"saved from a fire\" src=\"https:\/\/chzdailywhat.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/t3c9w6xilk2psqmiwj-tlg2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"322\"><\/p>\n<p>The last take linked to descriptions of pictures and this project collects pictures that all match one description: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/theburninghouse.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">What would you take out of a fire?<\/a> <\/em>My favorite is above.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if, as more data moves to the cloud, computers will drop out of these shots. \u00a0I wouldn\u2019t like to lose something <em>expensive<\/em>, but I\u2019d really run back in for my external hard drive at least because I don\u2019t want to lose something <em>irreplaceable<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 6 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/5908653\/watch-ben-afflecks-trailer-for-argo-the-fake-science-fiction-movie-that-saved-6-americans-from-iran\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Via io9<\/a>, the cool-looking trailer for <em>Argo<\/em>, Ben Afflect\u2019s new too-weird-to be-fictional movie about the U.S. faking a science fiction movie as cover to smuggle out six American hostages in Iran (they got out and hid themselves before all the other embassy workers were rounded up).<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Argo - Exclusive Official Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OxiLZ24gPDA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/magazine\/2007\/04\/feat_cia\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Wired<\/em> story that reports on the non-fictional mission<\/a> is awesome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 7 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 363px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"sterilization\" src=\"https:\/\/humanitiesandhealth.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/sterlizingoperatingroom1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"232\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sterilizing an operation with carbolic acid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I would hate for a Friday link roundup to go by without a history of medicine story, and, luckily, Atul Gawande, one of my favorite science writers, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMra1202392\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a piece in the New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>. \u00a0Here\u2019s my favorite quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It would take a little while for surgeons to discover that the use of anesthesia allowed them time to be meticulous. Despite the advantages of anesthesia, Liston, like many other surgeons, proceeded in his usual lightning-quick and bloody way. Spectators in the operating-theater gallery would still get out their pocket watches to time him. The butler\u2019s operation, for instance, took an astonishing 25 seconds from incision to wound closure. (Liston operated so fast that he once accidentally amputated an assistant\u2019s fingers along with a patient\u2019s leg, according to Hollingham.
