Ah, but in my pleasure in quoting Waugh to make a mathematical point<\/a> in the last Blogathon post, I skipped answering the actual question the commenters had asked. \u201cIf the marginal impact of gay marriage on gay people was negative, would I change my position?\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer is, that it would depend on the data. \u00a0I\u2019m always opposed to restricting the liberty of a few exceptional people if everyone else is suffering from it (mandatory vaccines, soda taxes, the list goes on and on). \u00a0But this is a weird case.<\/p>\n

It reminds me of the studies that claimed that parents are less happy<\/em> on net than they would be if they remained childless<\/a>. \u00a0When I saw those results, I didn\u2019t think we should discourage parenting. \u00a0I suspected that happiness<\/em> was a poor outcome variable to choose to track. \u00a0I\u2019m not sure what the right one would be (\u2018flourishing<\/em>\u2018 is hard to quantify).<\/p>\n

If I saw convincing numbers that gay marriage was harmful, I\u2019d be much more likely to assume we were preparing people for marriage badly<\/em> than that the institution should be scrapped for that group.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
