{"id":3488,"date":"2012-06-11T17:22:31","date_gmt":"2012-06-11T21:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=3488"},"modified":"2013-01-16T01:11:46","modified_gmt":"2013-01-16T06:11:46","slug":"im-ok-with-companionate-marriage-blogathon-912","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/06\/im-ok-with-companionate-marriage-blogathon-912.html","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m ok with companionate marriage [Blogathon 9\/12]"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>This post is number nine of twelve for the Secular Student Alliance Blogathon. \u00a0I\u2019m responding to comments in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/05\/go-ahead-tell-me-whats-wrong-with-homosexuality.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Go Ahead, Tell Me What\u2019s Wrong with Homosexuality<\/a>\u201d thread all day. \u00a0You can read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/06\/why-would-christians-support-the-secular-students-alliance.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">an explanation of the Blogathon and a pitch for donations (even if you\u2019re religious) here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.secularstudents.org\/ssaweek\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3464\" title=\"blogathon\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/06\/blogathon1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"128\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been an essay making the rounds by <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5917022\/im-a-gay-mormon-whos-been-happily-married-for-10-years\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Josh Weed, a gay Mormon man<\/a> who\u2019s been happily married to his wife for ten years and has had several children with her. \u00a0I was reminded of it when thinking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/06\/how-critical-is-sexual-desire-to-human-identity-blogathon-812.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">how essential sexuality is to human identity<\/a> in the last post. \u00a0Weed opted for a companionate marriage, where the two are intimate partners, but their bond isn\u2019t driven by sexual chemistry. \u00a0As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/millman\/if-marrying-someone-you-arent-attracted-to-makes-you-a-unicorn-unicorns-are-fairly-common-historically-speaking\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Noah Millman wrote for AmCon<\/a>, it\u2019s only relatively recently that sexual comparability and desire have been rated as\u00a0<em>necessary<\/em> components of marriage.<\/p>\n<p>A number of people see this kind of marriage as a waste (or worse, a ticking time bomb), but I\u2019m not sure that I have any objection. \u00a0Or that most liberals would if we just tweak the parameters a little bit. \u00a0Would this be a good outcome for Weed if he were asexual? If he were a woman nearing the end of her fertility who hadn\u2019t found someone with whom she had a sexual <em>frisson<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Why shouldn\u2019t two good friends want to entrust their lives to each other and pass on their love to a child just because they need to lie back and think of England when the time comes to\u00a0conceive\u00a0one. \u00a0The relationship of two friends is obviously <em>different<\/em> from that of two lovers, but I\u2019m not sure why it\u2019s necessarily <em>lesser<\/em> or a poor type of parenting relationship.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is number nine of twelve for the Secular Student Alliance Blogathon. \u00a0I\u2019m responding to comments in the \u201cGo Ahead, Tell Me What\u2019s Wrong with Homosexuality\u201d thread all day. \u00a0You can read an explanation of the Blogathon and a pitch for donations (even if you\u2019re religious) here.
