font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 2 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a while since I mentioned \u00a0my overcoming-gnostic-hatred-of-the-physical-through-cooking project, but it is still ongoing. \u00a0This week I made the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.101cookbooks.com\/archives\/easy-little-bread-recipe.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Easy Little Bread recipe<\/a> from 101 Cookbooks and it was indeed both easy and little. \u00a0I didn\u2019t have any rolled oats, so I substituted steelcut oats with no ill effects (and I think a nice texture).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3563\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3563\" style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.101cookbooks.com\/archives\/easy-little-bread-recipe.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3563   \" title=\"photo\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/06\/photo-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"329\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mmm\u2026 acceptance of physical instantiation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let no one say that philosophy doesn\u2019t have real world consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 3 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and speaking of delightful making, I recently discovered the tumblrs <a href=\"http:\/\/nerdbabies.tumblr.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nerd Babies<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cosplayingchildren.tumblr.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cosplaying Children<\/a>. \u00a0I really like how many of the costumes are simply done by just\u00a0top-stitching\u00a0over the kind of shirt you can find at a thrift store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nerdbabies.tumblr.com\/post\/24987989219\/thor-is-four-people-have-been-sending-in-some\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"baby thor\" src=\"https:\/\/25.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_m5hh0gS2Zz1qc9osso1_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"344\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then there are costumes like these:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cosplayingchildren.tumblr.com\/post\/24142334218\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"baby joker\" src=\"https:\/\/24.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_m4ec3uL0LU1r4lj6ao1_500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"378\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s totally legit to go to the baby shower of a friend and bring them cyberpunk onsies, right?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 4 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Getting to costume children (and give them the skills to costume themselves) seems like one major benefit of having kids. \u00a0If you\u2019re looking for another way to get them to think creatively, you might like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rumint.org\/gregconti\/publications\/KobayashiMaru_PrePub.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Conti and Caroland\u2019s exam where you <em>have<\/em> to cheat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conti and Caroland teach a course on cyberwarfare, and they wanted their students to be able to think like an intruder in order to design better security systems. \u00a0So they told students that they would be tested on the first 100 digits of pi in a few days, and, since it was of no use to memorize the number, they were expected to cheat. \u00a0Collaboration was encouraged, and if you were caught, you\u2019d get an F. \u00a0Among my favorite solutions:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One student hand wrote the answers on a blank sheet of paper (in advance) and simply turned it in, exploiting the fact that we didn\u2019t pass out a formal exam sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Another just memorized the first ten digits of pi and randomly filled in the rest, assuming the instructors would be too lazy to check every digit. His assumption was correct.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schneier.com\/blog\/archives\/2012\/06\/teaching_the_se.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Schneier on Security<\/a>, of course)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 5 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And sometimes the antagonist you\u2019re trying to outwit to be secure may not even human or deliberately malevolent. \u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thedailywtf.com\/Articles\/Classic-WTF-Ive-Got-The-Monkey-Now.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">I\u2019ve Got the Monkey Now<\/a>\u201d an essay from The Daily WTF tells the story of how a simple computer error check led the marketing department of Harvard School of Business Press seriously astray.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 6 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you run into problems, it helps to think like a supervillian, so my hat\u2019s off to the mayor of the small Italian town of\u00a0Viganella. \u00a0For 83 days out of the year, the surrounding mountains cut the villagers in the valley off from the natural light of the sun.<\/p>\n<p>So he built a <a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/5889963\/in-2006-an-italian-village-was-forced-to-build-an-artificial-sun\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FORTY SQUARE METER COMPUTERIZED MIRROR ON TOP OF A MOUNTAIN TO REDIRECT THE SUN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 7 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The last bit of good news may not sound as epic as that last take, but I\u2019m pretty excited about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/14\/sports\/pop-warner-football-limits-contact-in-practices.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pop Warner\u2019s decision<\/a> to radically limit how much time young football players can spend on collisions in practices. \u00a0I\u2019m <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yaledailynews.com\/news\/2010\/nov\/19\/libresco-the-games-not-worth-the-risk\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pretty staunchly opposed to football<\/a>, since serious brain damage seems to be baked into the design of the game, so this change doesn\u2019t satisfy me, but it\u2019s a big improvement. \u00a0I don\u2019t buy the argument that pro players are adequately compensated for the risk of dementia and early death by their salaries and stardom (especially\u00a0when their reduced brain function often leads them to waste their earnings) but no one should be arguing that the fun of high school football is worth a bevy of concussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For more Quick Takes, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conversiondiary.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Conversion Diary!<\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2014 1 \u2014 The Turing Test answers have been revealed, but there\u2019s more analysis (and thus, more graphs!) to come over the weekend.
