\u00a0We discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/06\/data-data-data-blogathon-1212.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a couple methodological concerns<\/a> here already, but I want to give them credit where it\u2019s due. \u00a0The New Family Structures Survey put together a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familystructurestudies.com\/outcomes\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">very nice interactive visualization<\/a> for their data. \u00a0And, even more credit, their sample sizes and demographic breakdowns are available right on the first page of the visualization.<\/p>\n<p>People have complained about how few children in the survey were in long-term stable gay families a la Dan Savage\u2019s, but no one I\u2019ve seen has broken down the numbers, even though NFSS gave us the tools to do it. \u00a0NFSS counted a child as raised in a gay household if either the mother or the father had ever been in a same-sex relationship while the child was a child. \u00a0Here are the subgroups they broke those relationships into:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lived with the queer parent while the parent was in a same-sex relationship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Lived with the queer parent while parent was with a same-sex partner of more than four months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Lived with the queer parent while parent was with a same-sex partner of more than three years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we\u2019re talking about the impact of gay marriage, we\u2019re most interested in that third category. \u00a0Let\u2019s go to the table!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3730\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3730\" style=\"width: 579px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/06\/family-sample-size.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3730\" title=\"family sample size\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/06\/family-sample-size.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"134\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The number of respondents in each category are not whole numbers because, presumably, NFSS rounded the percentages<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So we\u2019ve got, at most, <em>two<\/em> kids raised by a long-term male-male couple, and up to 41 raised by two women who have stuck it out together. \u00a0These data say pretty much nothing about gay marriage for men, and anything about gay marriage for women is probably overshadowed by the 77% of the queer women sample who weren\u2019t in &gt;3 year relationships. \u00a0(Forty one people is probably too few to contrast this subgroup directly with long-term straight couples).<\/p>\n<p>I can anticipate one question already: \u201cWhat if there just aren\u2019t many gay couple who stay together? \u00a0Isn\u2019t it ok if the data reflects that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No, not really. \u00a0You\u2019re really talking about two different studies. \u00a0If you want to give a demographic snapshot, it\u2019s fine that some groups have really small showings \u2014 that\u2019s what you\u2019re trying to quantify. \u00a0If you want to contrast two groups, you have to <em>oversample<\/em> the rarer group so you have enough people to make a good comparison. \u00a0The NFSS people didn\u2019t get enough two-parent, same-sex households to compare them to opposite-sex, not-separated families. \u00a0Next time round (and I do hope there will be a next time) they need to change their sampling frame.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember that study contrasting outcomes for children of gay parents with children in other kinds of families?
