Wherever there\u2019s a hang up, You\u2019ll find the Spidermaaan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But seriously, the new movie was very funny, and Emma Stone is a fabulous, proactive, and concussion-safety aware Gwen Stacy, so I was utterly delighted. \u00a0Also delightful: this Spiderman humor video (in which someone has appropriate priorities).<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spider-Man&#039;s Less Impressive Superpower\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A-PRCQFXXJs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 3 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And speaking of costumed heroism, I\u2019m pretty interested in this larping documentary web series from the Nerdist Channel. \u00a0It looks like they\u2019ve done a nice job using overlay on the video to give you an intuitive idea of how the \u00a0battles and encounters work, without having to drill viewers on all the rules.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qTVjjYsH92w\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qTVjjYsH92w<\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 4 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, I\u2019m having a very good genre week because it\u2019s the absolute best time of the year! \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1250003555\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1250003555\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gardner Dozois\u2019s <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1250003555\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=unequyoked-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1250003555\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Year\u2019s Best in Science Fiction<\/a> <\/em>is out! \u00a0I did plenty of nice, mostly spiritual reading this week during the power outage (C.S. font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 5 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In fact, I\u2019m going to pop off and read another one of the stories while you guys listen to this story titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prx.org\/pieces\/73865-two-little-girls-explain-the-worst-haircut-ever\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Two Little Girls Explain The Worst Haircut Ever<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0Most parents don\u2019t respond to this kind of situation by interviewing their children, but most parents aren\u2019t NPR reporters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 6 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ok, hope you enjoyed that while I was reading an Elizabeth Bear short story. \u00a0Anyway, the arrival of the scifi anthology late July 3rd meant I had to show heroic forbearance on July 4th. \u00a0We had people over for a\u00a0barbeque\u00a0and, between hosting and cooking, I did not get to start the book at all, yet I managed to resist the urge to set my own house on fire in order to read quietly amid the embers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/07\/Independence-Day-Barbecue-July-4-2012-049.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3822\" title=\"Independence Day Barbecue, July 4, 2012 049\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2012\/07\/Independence-Day-Barbecue-July-4-2012-049-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"369\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the menu, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingarthurflour.com\/recipes\/sourdough-pretzels-recipe\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">King Arthur\u2019s Sourdough Pretzels<\/a> (with grated parmesan\u00a0cheese melted on top) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/smittenkitchen.com\/2012\/06\/triple-berry-summer-buttermilk-bundt\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">red, white, and blueberry cake<\/a> from Smitten Kitchen (I followed my usual rule of doubling the quantities of lemon and\/or garlic if they appear in a recipe). \u00a0The result was still a little too sweet for my liking, but other people enjoyed it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 7 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But all baking is necessarily anti-climactic after I read the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookingissues.com\/2012\/07\/04\/how-to-become-a-seafood-anesthesiologist-and-kill-your-4th-of-july-lobster\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">How to become a Seafood Anesthesiologist and Kill your 4th of July Lobster<\/a>\u201d post at Cooking Issues. \u00a0I love these guys. \u00a0For example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Over the years, Nils and I performed many side by side taste tests killing lobsters various ways, and the ones we knocked out with clove oil always tasted best \u2013sweeter, cleaner. When tasted side by side, the lobsters killed by simple boiling or steaming had a muddier, dirtier finish on the palate\u2026<\/p>\n<p>To get you prepped for your 4th, here\u2019s a list of lobster-killing techniques I\u2019ve tried and my thoughts about them, plus a recipe for a fish and lobster anesthetic you can easily make at home.<\/p>\n<p>1. Boiling or Steaming: the standard way, but not the best way, to kill a lobster. The lobster knocks around the pot for quite a while. Dan Ward, then a grad student at the University of New Hampshire, once hooked an electrode up to a Lobster heart for me and boiled it. The heart beat for 1 minute 53 seconds.
