I\u2019ve got a new opinion piece up on the Huffington Post today titled \u201cThe Only Law of Facebook is Fatwa<\/a>\u201d on the strange evolution of standards for free speech online. \u00a0A preview quote from the piece:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe traditional defense of censorship by corporation is that those who don\u2019t like the terms and conditions are free to take their business elsewhere. But, as the endless arguments about Facebook\u2019s privacy policies make clear, leaving a social network isn\u2019t like switching carriers for your cell phone. It\u2019s more like giving up the phone all together.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Patheos, a religion portal, is running a special feature on The Future of Religion<\/a>. \u00a0Every week, writers from a particular faith tradition discuss their history and what\u2019s to come. \u00a0Some of the essays are hit or miss, but it\u2019s worth keeping your eye on this summer. \u00a0Up next week: Catholicism!<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t leave you without a math link this week, so check out the wikipedia explanation of the\u00a0Hairy Sphere Theorem<\/a>. \u00a0It is every bit as interesting as it sounds, and the lower dimensional examples are easy to visualize.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s been some talk about whether Christianity can be self-justifying, but I think most of us can agree that some sects of Christianity that are self-refuting. \u00a0The Cornerstone Church has established what they are calling the Man Church<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Man Church is church the way a man expects it to be done. No singing, short sermon, time to talk with other guys, no women present, and coffee and donuts. That\u2019s the way men want to do church. The topics of discussion will have a definite manly focus \u2013 being the best possible husband, father, employee, leader \u2013 being a real man. In fact, every aspect of Man Church is geared for men \u2013 not like any other church you have seen. This ain\u2019t your mama\u2019s church!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do the organizers not realize that this is a profound insult to Christianity and as well as to men? \u00a0I\u2019m all for the soft sell, but if you haven\u2019t got anything more compelling than free eats, your religion is in for some troubles. \u00a0Most attempts to \u2018popularize\u2019 Christianity seem to work by dumbing it down, and privileging its social aspects over its spiritual ones. \u00a0In the long run, this type of conversion doesn\u2019t take.<\/p>\n

\u20136\u2013<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

After all that ribbing, I do want to single out one church for kudos. \u00a0The pastor at the Hill Country Bible Church<\/a> is making an admirable effort to critically engage his flock and all comers. \u00a0He\u2019s asked people to submit the questions that \u201cstop your faith in his tracks\u201d and then builds up sermons around them. \u00a0The site for questions is on hiatus due to heavy traffic, so, to read the full details, check out the write up at Common Sense Atheism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bravo to Pastor Bobby Pruitt! \u00a0If Christianity is true, it should be able to handle questions with more than proffered snack platters. \u00a0Well done.<\/p>\n
