I plan to post a quote from Granny Weatherwax, a recurring character in Terry Pratchett\u2019s Discworld<\/em> series on Wednesdays, along with a brief commentary. A little about Granny Weatherwax<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/strong>It may not sound as respectable as identifying with Scarlett O\u2019Hara or Jane Eyre, but Esme Weatherwax is the literary character I\u2019ve always felt closest to. To put it briefly (and to use my favorite quote from The History Boys<\/em><\/a>):\n

The best moments in reading are when you come across something \u2013 a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things \u2013 that you\u2019d thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you\u2019ve never met, maybe even someone long dead. And it\u2019s as if a hand has come out, and taken yours\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I love Granny Weatherwax for her appreciation (and consequent distrust) of the power of storytelling to change the audience as well as the teller. Her comments on religion and morality in the books have frequently served as the articulation of ideas I had already felt deeply. I look forward to sharing her comments and my thoughts with all of you.<\/p>\n
