Yesterday, in my review of\u00a0inSignificant<\/em><\/a>, I started teasing the next thread of the Sondheim Symposium<\/a>.<\/p>\n For Bobby to progress, he needs to make himself vulnerable and unsafe. \u00a0We think of him transitioning into the role of servant, as Christ does. \u00a0A future Bobby, we hope, won\u2019t still be able to be described as \u201cExclusive you! Elusive you! \u00a0Will any person ever get the juice of you?\u201d as he is in \u201cYou Could Drive a Person Crazy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n If Company<\/em> ends with a choice to give oneself (albeit it to an as of yet unspecified beloved), Passion\u2019s plot is driven by the difficulty of knowing of what to do when someone offers themself as a gift to you, unsolicited and possibly unwanted.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Pop over to Wikipedia, if you don\u2019t mind, and check out the synopsis of\u00a0Passion<\/em><\/a> (it almost certainly won\u2019t be staged near you any time soon, and, though you can and should order the DVD<\/a>, I don\u2019t think your experience will be spoiled by knowing the plot. \u00a0Passion<\/em> derives a lot of it\u2019s tension from the\u00a0how<\/em> more than the\u00a0what<\/em>). \u00a0I do really encourage you to click the video links in this post.<\/p>\n Unlike Bobby, Giorgio, the protagonist of Passion<\/em>\u00a0is already giving of himself. \u00a0He\u2019s quick to assume the best of others, and lights up at the possibility to be of use or of comfort to anyone he encounters. \u00a0Unlike the other officers he serves with, he makes a personal connection with his men. \u00a0Giorgio is more open than Bobby, but it\u2019s not obvious whether he\u2019s more vulnerable. \u00a0At the beginning of the show, Giorgio has an easy<\/em> grace; he shows none of the discomfort that Bobby calls down upon himself in\u00a0<\/em>\u201cBeing Alive<\/a>\u201d \u2013 the closing number of Company<\/em>.<\/p>\n Giorgio\u2019s suffering begins when he becomes the focus of Fosca\u2019s love. \u00a0Fosca is ill and not beautiful, but she is most off-putting because of her relentlessness. \u00a0She pursues Giorgio without care for her own safety or his reputation. \u00a0To get a sense of her unmerciful-feeling love, watch \u201cLoving You\u201d below.<\/p>\n
