{"id":5507,"date":"2012-10-17T15:49:07","date_gmt":"2012-10-17T19:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=5507"},"modified":"2012-10-17T17:52:46","modified_gmt":"2012-10-17T21:52:46","slug":"to-be-or-not-to-be-how-to-frame-the-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/10\/to-be-or-not-to-be-how-to-frame-the-question.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;To Be or not To Be&#8221; How to frame the question?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"ASL interpreter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gpc.edu\/programsofstudy\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/Interpreter018.secondary.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"634\" height=\"219\"><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been doing\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lectio_Divina\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">lectio divina<\/a><\/em> in the Gospel of John, and I found myself paying a lot of attention to the use of the verb \u201cto be.\u201d \u00a0(I was thinking about the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I_Am_that_I_Am\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">I am that I am<\/a><\/em> answer that God gives to Moses when asked for his name).<\/p>\n<p>But then I got a bit distracted by a nerdy translation question: How do people translate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+3%3A14&amp;version=KJV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Exodus 3:14<\/a> (\u201cAnd God said unto Moses,\u00a0I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel,\u00a0I Am\u00a0hath sent me unto you\u201d) into languages that don\u2019t include\u00a0<em>esse<\/em> (to be) as a verb?<\/p>\n<p>In Latin, you don\u2019t\u00a0<em>have<\/em> to use\u00a0<em>esse<\/em>, but it\u2019s an option. \u00a0I can say\u00a0<em>Gaius discipulus<\/em>, and everyone knows I mean Gaius is a student, because the declensions of the nouns match. \u00a0I can say\u00a0<em>Gaius discipulus est<\/em> if I\u2019d like, but I don\u2019t have to. \u00a0The Latin Vulgate translation of this verse has to reach for\u00a0<em>esse<\/em> to say \u201c<em>Ego sum qui sum<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, in ASL, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lifeprint.com\/asl101\/pages-signs\/b\/be-verbs.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>esse<\/em>-equivalent doesn\u2019t exist at all<\/a>. \u00a0The proper syntax for saying I am a student is \u201cI student\u201d or \u201cStudent I\u201d or, for extra emphasis \u201cI student I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I have no idea how \u201c<em>I am that I am<\/em>\u201d would be interpreted. \u00a0I\u2019m going to ask around, but I\u2019m pretty sure ASL isn\u2019t the only language without\u00a0<em>esse<\/em>. \u00a0Can people think of any other examples to investigate?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m trying to encourage some of my multilingual facebook friends to crosspost. \u00a0They\u2019ve been discussing translations in Arabic, Hebrew, and Japanese. \u00a0One Deaf friend made the following suggestion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I would just do the fancy sweeping both-hands up-and-down pointing-to-self thing that you do when you\u2019re introducing yourself formally. with a \u201cthis is obvious and this is all you\u2019re going to get\u201d expression on my face.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maaan, this is why I really want an ASL video Missal.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been doing\u00a0lectio divina in the Gospel of John, and I found myself paying a lot of attention to the use of the verb \u201cto be.\u201d \u00a0(I was thinking about the\u00a0I am that I am answer that God gives to Moses when asked for his name).
