Greta Christina, an atheist blogger<\/a>, has been struggling with grief the last few weeks after the death of her father. \u00a0Unfortunately, she\u2019s also just been diagnosed with endometrial cancer<\/a>. \u00a0She transitioned to full time writing and speaking earlier this year, which means being slowed down by illness and treatment has a huge impact on her finances.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s asking for donations (and book recommendations), and I\u2019m chipping in<\/a> (and shipping\u00a0Arcadia<\/a><\/em>). \u00a0I know I\u2019ve got a crossover audience, so I wanted to give people a heads up in case they\u2019d like to contribute, too.<\/p>\n

One reason I admire Greta is because she\u2019s done a lot of work trying to translate feminist concerns to people who aren\u2019t engaged and don\u2019t understand why they should be. \u00a0I took inspiration for some of my restricted comment threads from times she reached out to answer specific questions or troubleshoot problems. \u00a0She fights sexism wherever she finds it, and she\u2019s looking to convert people into allies, not just defeat enemies.<\/p>\n

Whether you donate to Greta or not, I recommend you take this altruistic ask as a trigger to\u00a0also<\/em> engage in really efficient altruism. \u00a0I\u2019m matching my donation to Greta with a donation to Against Malaria<\/a>, a GiveWell-vetted<\/a> charity. \u00a0(They\u2019ve just published an updated evaluation of malaria nets on their blog<\/a>).<\/p>\n
