God willing and the creek don\u2019t rise, I\u2019ll be\u00a0received\u00a0into the Catholic Church four weeks from today. \u00a0However, it just so happens that the baptism falls on the same weekend as The Game<\/a>. \u00a0That means I\u2019ll be taking a night train from Boston to DC with a group of my college friends to make it back in time.<\/p>\n

Since we\u2019ll be traveling together, I thought it might be nice to say Evening Office when we board in Boston and Morning Office when we arrive in DC. \u00a0(Those are parts of the Liturgy of the Hours<\/a>). \u00a0And I thought it would be fun to put together a bunch of different prayers and hymns for people to look at, together or on their own, until they fall asleep.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be including some of my favorites. \u00a0Definitely on the list is St. Patrick\u2019s Breastplate<\/a>\u00a0and my current favorite hymn \u201cGod Whose Purpose is to Kindle.\u201d \u00a0It goes like this:<\/p>\n

God, who still a sword delivers rather than a placid peace,
\nwith your sharpened sword disturb us, from complacency release!
\nSave us now from satisfaction, when we privately are free,
\nyet are undisturbed in spirit by our neighbor\u2019s misery.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But I realize people might like to have some slightly less aggressive hymns to look at, so please do recommend some of your favorite prayers, hymns, or brief essays for us to print out and take along with us. \u00a0Tell us a little about what you\u2019re recommending and we\u2019ll all pick up some new ideas.<\/p>\n

And, in case you have smartphones, one of the reasons I thought of doing this is that I\u2019ve used Google Docs to put together a lot of the lyrics of hymns I really like, so I\u2019ve always got them ready at hand (if I have wifi). Even if I\u2019m in a place I can\u2019t sing really loudly (my preferred style; see why I like the martial hymns?), I can read over the lyrics and hear the song in my head. \u00a0And songs are prayers that come pre-inflected, so I don\u2019t worry too much about\u00a0how<\/em> I\u2019m saying the prayer.<\/p>\n
