{"id":5694,"date":"2012-11-02T16:50:18","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T20:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=5694"},"modified":"2012-11-02T16:50:18","modified_gmt":"2012-11-02T20:50:18","slug":"those-souls-youve-known","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2012\/11\/those-souls-youve-known.html","title":{"rendered":"Those (Souls) You&#8217;ve Known"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>When I read\u00a0<em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows<\/em>, I didn\u2019t cry until Fred died, and then I started sobbing. \u00a0(Many apologies, confused people who were on that plane with me!). \u00a0After I was finished, I was at loose ends, not sure what to do next. \u00a0And I ended up listening to \u201cThose You\u2019ve Known\u201d from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spring_Awakening\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Spring Awakening<\/em><\/a> on repeat. \u00a0As in\u00a0<em>Deathly Hallows<\/em>, the protagonist is comforted and led by the spectral presence of deceased characters.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Those You&#039;ve Known Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele&#039;s Last Spring Awakening Performance\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3R2kvWjUJ1w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>It\u2019s come back into my head today, on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All_Souls'_Day\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Feast of All Souls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Those you\u2019ve known<br>\nAnd lost, still walk behind you<br>\nAll alone<br>\nThey linger till they find you<\/p>\n<p>Without them<br>\nThe world grows dark around you<br>\nAnd nothing is the same until you know that they have found you<\/p>\n<p>Those you\u2019ve pained<br>\nMay carry that still with them<br>\nAll the same<br>\nThey whisper: \u201cAll forgiven.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One thing that\u2019s especially nice in the context of the musical is that this song picks up some of the melody and motifs from \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=72_NTMiJGFs\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">All That\u2019s Known<\/a>\u201d in the beginning of the show, which is a much more isolated song (all the pronouns are \u2018I\u2019 and \u2018you\u2019 and they\u2019re set in\u00a0irreconcilable\u00a0opposition). \u00a0By the end of the show, the protagonist hasn\u2019t just grown up and out of his community (though, since it\u2019s a poisonous one, we\u2019re glad he\u2019s done that); he\u2019s found some kind of community and obligation to others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014 \u2014 \u2014<\/p>\n<p>But if you like your All Saints and All Souls posts to be a little less musical and a little more non-fictional verging on fictional, may I point you to <a href=\"http:\/\/darwincatholic.blogspot.com\/2012\/10\/repost-catholic-can-do-halloween.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this story via DarwinCatholic<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So now the Church had feasts for all those in heaven and all those in purgatory? What about those in the other place? It seems Irish Catholic peasants wondered about the unfortunate souls in hell. After all, if the souls in hell are left out when we celebrate those in heaven and purgatory, they might be unhappy enough to cause trouble. So it became customary to bang pots and pans on All Hallows Even to let the damned know they were not forgotten.
