Caruso, great care was taken to painstakingly recreate the experience of slowly inching one\u2019s way through the dense work of literature. Starring Viggo Mortensen as both Alyosha and Aleksey, depending on the scene, and Laura Linney as someone\u2019s mother or aunt, the film opens with a three-minute-long summary taken directly from the novel\u2019s back cover.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 3 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look, I\u2019m splitting this off into it\u2019s own take, so no one gets confused and thinks\u00a0<em>this<\/em> is satire. \u00a0<em>William Shatner played Alyosha in a film version of\u00a0<\/em>The Brothers Karamazov. \u00a0I know I\u2019ve linked it before, but it grows no less perplexing.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Original Theatrical Trailer | The Brothers Karamazov | Warner Archive\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-cv983slQig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But this I have not linked before: Bill Nye doing a one man imitating Shatner show:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bill Nye is William Shatner\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/otkW4TlgC5w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 4 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m delighted by Anthony Esolen\u2019s new grammar series at\u00a0<em>First Things<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s like\u00a0<em>The Way Things Work<\/em> for grammar nerds! \u00a0Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/blogs\/firstthoughts\/2012\/12\/13\/grammar-lesson-of-the-day-deponent-verbs\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this post on deponent verbs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Consider these sentences:<\/p>\n<p>I hurt the quarterback.<br>\nI was hurt by her remark.<br>\nI hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Notice the differences between the three? In the first, the true active voice, the subject is the agent of the verb. In the second, the true passive, the subject suffers the action of the verb. But in the third\u2014what? The subject is the agent, because he\u2019s actively experiencing something named by the verb; but he suffers the verb. \u201cI\u2019m hurting\u201d does not mean \u201cI am walking around the neighborhood punching people,\u201d but \u201cI am feeling hurt; something is hurting me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 5 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And, for more language nerdery, MentalFloss has a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/blogs\/archives\/156077\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">12 letters that didn\u2019t make the English alphabet<\/a>. \u00a0I found out where the \u201cYe\u201d in \u201cYe Olde Whatnot\u201d comes from, but I think my favorite was the ampersand (&amp;).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Today we just use it for stylistic purposes (and when we\u2019ve run out of space in a text message or tweet), but the ampersand has had a long and storied history in English, and was actually frequently included as a 27th letter of the alphabet as recently as the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it\u2019s because of its placement in the alphabet that it gets its name. Originally, the character was simply called \u201cand\u201d or sometimes \u201cet\u201d (from the Latin word for and, which the ampersand is usually stylistically meant to resemble). However, when teaching children the alphabet, the &amp; was often placed at the end, after Z, and recited as \u201cand per se and,\u201d meaning \u201cand in and of itself\u201d or \u201cand standing on its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So you\u2019d have \u201cw, x, y, z, and, per se, and.\u201d Over time, the last bit morphed into \u201campersand,\u201d and it stuck even after we quit teaching it as part of the alphabet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 6 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AV Club has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/articles\/mel-brooks-on-how-to-play-hitler-and-how-he-almost,89843\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a predictably funny and interesting interview with Mel Brooks up<\/a>. \u00a0One of my favorite revelations:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MB: I knew there was going to be laughing. The first time I used [the white handkerchiefs] was during The Twelve Chairs. There was too much laughter; I couldn\u2019t shoot. So I went out and bought 100 white handkerchiefs and said, \u201cStick this in your mouth.\u201d And then, with Young Frankenstein, I bought 200\u2014it was a bigger crew, a lot of people. I said, \u201cIf you\u2019re not in the scene, take this handkerchief, and when you feel you\u2019re going to laugh, shove this in your mouth.\u201d And every once in a while, I\u2019d be shooting a scene and I would turn, and I could see a sea of white handkerchiefs. So I said, \u201cOkay, this is going to be funny. This is good.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 7 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No need to stop singing Christmas carols just yet! \u00a0Not only does the Christmas season last until Epiphany for Catholics, but, if you\u2019re reading this <a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/5966850\/in-1938-psychological-researchers-studied-college-students-by-hiding-under-their-beds\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">true life mad science post from io9<\/a>, you may find yourself humming \u201cHe sees you when you\u2019re sleeping\u201d again.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In order not to introduce artifacts into the conversations, the investigators took special precautions to keep the subjects ignorant of the fact that their remarks were being recorded.
