That\u2019s their thing. In fact, that was really all they were known for. In the books, each house could be boiled down to one or two words: Gryffindors are brave, Ravenclaws are smart, Slytherins are evil and\/or racist, and Hufflepuffs are\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">pathetic<\/span>\u00a0loyal. (Giving rise to this hilarious\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y0Z5_wipT2o\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Second City mockery<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>But while reading\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hpmor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality<\/a>, I realized that there\u2019s actually quite a lot of potential for interesting reading in each house. Ravenclaws would be interested in philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and mathematics; Gryffindors in combat, ethics, and democracy; Slytherins in persuasion, rhetoric, and political machination; and Hufflepuffs in productivity, happiness, and the game theory of cooperation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Over at Less Wrong, people (me included) <a href=\"http:\/\/lesswrong.com\/r\/discussion\/lw\/h0o\/harry_potter_and_the_methods_of_rationality\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">suggested additions to Jesse\u2019s lists<\/a>. \u00a0Also, I had fun checking what percentage of each shelf I\u2019d read. \u00a0Turns out it\u2019s:\u00a0\u00a034% Ravenclaw. 34% Gryffindor, 24% Slytherin, 21% Hufflepuff. (<a href=\"http:\/\/directedstudies.yale.edu\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Directed Studies<\/a> was the cause of a good chuck of my Gryffindor points).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 4 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of you have probably seen the <a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/435\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">xkcd about applied vs theoretical fields of study<\/a>, but believe you me, you want to click through to see <a href=\"http:\/\/abstrusegoose.com\/504\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Abstruse Goose\u2019s take on the question<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 5 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Want some awesome applied work to read about? \u00a0One of my college debate friends has coauthored <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2013\/03\/04\/one-study-explains-why-its-tough-to-pass-liberal-laws\/?wprss=rss_ezra-klein\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a polisci paper that has Ezra Klein swooning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last year, a group of political scientists took a random sample of state legislators and asked them a slew of questions, most of which boiled down to: \u201cWhat do your constituents think about policy?\u201d Do they support gay marriage? Do they support Obamacare? Do they support action to combat global warming?<\/p>\n<p>Broockman and Skovron find that legislators consistently believe their constituents are more conservative than they actually are. This includes Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives. But conservative legislators generally overestimate the conservatism of their constituents by 20 points. \u201cThis difference is so large that nearly half of conservative politicians appear to believe that they represent a district that is more conservative on these issues than is the most conservative district in the entire country,\u201d Broockman and Skovron write. This finding held up across a range of issues.<\/p>\n<p>Is it just that legislators don\u2019t talk to their constituents? Nope. Broockman and Skovron tried and failed to find any relationship between the amount of time legislators spend in their districts, going to community events, and so forth, and the accuracy of their reads on their districts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 6 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The charts for Broockman\u2019s paper are at the link above, and are well designed. \u00a0But many are the foes of good data visualization, and Junk Charts has a great explanation of <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/2013\/03\/blowing-the-whistle-at-bubble-charts.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">why bubble charts are pernicious<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>\u2014 7 \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I haven\u2019t talked about my job very much, but, to give you a more vivid picture, here\u2019s an illustration I drew while teaching yesterday:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2013\/03\/cfar-planning-monster.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-7102\" title=\"cfar planning monster\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2013\/03\/cfar-planning-monster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"566\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For more Quick Takes, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conversiondiary.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Conversion Diary!<\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2014 1 \u2014 It\u2019s March!
