It\u2019s Thanksgiving, and I have a family tradition to uphold, along with a blog tradition. \u00a0First, for all of you, my traditional Thanksgiving video:<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2013\/11\/26\/the-turkey-pardon-is-americas-dumbest-tradition\/?wprss=rss_ezra-klein&clsrd\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Brad Plummer has a post up on the absurdity of this tradition.<\/a> \u00a0In brief:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doing a media push about pardons for turkeys (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/turkey-2013\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">complete with hokey website<\/a>), while the President has pardoned and commuted the sentences of so few people<\/em> is a wee bit tacky<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s a\u00a0\u201ctradition\u201d that started in the 80s, so we\u2019re in the sweet spot of killing it now before we forget its origins and the practice becomes unstoppable<\/li>\n<li>Pardoned turkeys die within a year because the turkeys we breed for eating are absurdly proportioned beasts whose skeletons can\u2019t support their bulk for much longer than it takes to get to the table.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\u00a0<\/p>\nAnd speaking of bizarrely, and sometimes destructively, engineered animals, my family is watching the National Dog Show, as is traditional on Thanksgiving. \u00a0We turn up out nose at harmfully bred animals like the bulldog (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/27\/magazine\/can-the-bulldog-be-saved.html?pagewanted=all\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">which can neither turn up it\u2019s own nose or reliably breathe through it<\/a>), but all cooking and prep stops when our favorite dog emerges:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8350\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8350\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2013\/11\/mop-dog.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8350\" title=\"mop dog\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2013\/11\/mop-dog-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MOP DOG!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThere are actually\u00a0two<\/em> mop dog breeds in the show: the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Komondor\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Komondor<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puli\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Puli<\/a>.<\/p>\nThird place cutest goes to any of the tiny, long-haired dogs that look like sea cucumbers when they move.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\nAnd, in a first for Thanksgiving, I\u2019ve made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reformjudaism.org\/jewish-life\/food-recipes\/pumpkin-challah\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pumpkin challah bread<\/a>. \u00a0And I believe it\u2019s time to eat it.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2013\/11\/challah.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8358\" title=\"challah\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2013\/11\/challah.jpg\"
