{"id":8663,"date":"2014-01-17T01:11:41","date_gmt":"2014-01-17T06:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/?p=8663"},"modified":"2014-01-17T01:11:41","modified_gmt":"2014-01-17T06:11:41","slug":"7-quick-takes-11714","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/unequallyyoked\/2014\/01\/7-quick-takes-11714.html","title":{"rendered":"7 Quick Takes (1\/17\/14)"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conversiondiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/7_quick_takes_sm1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1387\" title=\"7_quick_takes_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conversiondiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/7_quick_takes_sm1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"195\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 1 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s theme is made things and the delight that people take in making them. \u00a0First up, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wimp.com\/gameperspective\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a game that requires you to use forced perceptive to resize the objects around you to solve spatial puzzles<\/a>. \u00a0I\u2019ll take a crack at explaining, but, believe me, it\u2019s faster to just check the video below:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tech Demo for Pillow Castle&#039;s First Person Puzzler (Superliminal)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HOfll06X16c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forced_perspective\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Forced perspective<\/a> is the name of the illusion that lets you look like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Europe_2007_Disk_1_340.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">you\u2019re holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/241435229994317923\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">trapping your friend in a bucket<\/a>. \u00a0The game lets you reposition objects or yourself and then treats the forced perspective view as though it were\u00a0<em>true<\/em> and adjusts the environment accordingly. \u00a0Totally, totally awesome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 2 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That game is a very hard act to follow. \u00a0Luckily, math exists.<\/p>\n<p>Even more luckily, Math with Bad Drawings exists, and, in a recent post, the author tells the story of <a href=\"http:\/\/mathwithbaddrawings.com\/2014\/01\/13\/undiscovered-math\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the first time he discovered a property of numbers all by himself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mathwithbaddrawings.com\/2014\/01\/13\/undiscovered-math\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-8664\" title=\"math with bad drawings\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/01\/math-with-bad-drawings.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"259\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I carried that formula with me for the next three years. I wore it like a locket and recited itlike an oath. It was pure and crystalline and true. Never mind that I hadn\u2019t proved it. It was right, and it was mine.<\/p>\n<p>When I hit Algebra 1, and learned not merely to write algebraic symbols but to manipulate them, I found that my formula wasn\u2019t just known. It was a trivial consequence of the distributive property.<\/p>\n<p>I suffered ten seconds of stunned disappointment that my treasured conjecture was nothing but old hat. Then I smiled. When you\u2019re standing on a mountain, you don\u2019t care that others have stood on that same spot before. You\u2019re just enjoying the view.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mathwithbaddrawings.com\/2014\/01\/13\/undiscovered-math\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read the whole thing\u00a0<em>chez lui<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 3 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many theories of ownership and making, of course. \u00a0Some people (like John Locke) believe that you come to own things by mixing your labor with them. \u00a0Some people (like Paul Muad\u2019Dib Atreides) think that objects belong to the person who has the power to destroy them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/30\/at-city-ballet-footwear-is-almost-as-important-as-feet\/?ref=todayspaper\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">After reading this article in the <em>NYT<\/em><\/a>, I think the women of the City Ballet company believe some combination of the two.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI just hate, more than anything, to hear ballerinas\u2019 shoes,\u201d the soft-spoken Ms. Peck explained. \u201cI think it takes away a little bit of the magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she began a nightly ritual of mercilessly whacking each of her pink satin shoes against a cinder-block wall at the David H. Koch Theater. \u201cSo I try my best to be as quiet as possible,\u201d she continued, slightly out of breath from the incessant shoe battery, as its ringing BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! echoed throughout the backstage area. \u201cThis really does help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026[E]ven handmade shoes are further customized by each dancer. Some, like Ms. Peck, whack them against walls; others bend them back and forth;, still others crush them in doors. The dancers sew on their own ribbons and elastics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That was the funniest part, but I loved reading all the intricate details of how the shoes are prepared. \u00a0The\u00a0<em>Times\u00a0<\/em>follows them all the from the manufacturers to the ballerinas engaged in battery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 4 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Um, to carry on the theme of beautiful things that involve violence? \u00a0<em>Vulture<\/em> has been doing a series of oral histories of great TV shows, and they got around to interviewing people involved with\u00a0<em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em>. \u00a0Specifically, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2013\/12\/oral-history-buffy-nerd-trio-jonathan-warren-andrew-tara-willow.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">about the nerdy Trio that develop into villains in season six<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Busch:<\/strong>\u00a0The very first scene that we shot together as the Trio, we were all sitting around a Dungeons &amp; Dragons board.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Petrie:<\/strong>\u00a0This was the first episode that I directed, \u201cFlooded,\u201d and that was straight from Joss Whedon, the pitch of their origin, [where Warren goes,] \u201cSo, you guys want to team up and take over Sunnydale?\u201d And the other two guys go, \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Busch:<\/strong>\u00a0Right after they yelled, \u201cAction!\u201d we realized that none of us knew how to play D&amp;D.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Petrie:<\/strong>\u00a0Is that true? They did say, \u201cWhat do we do?\u201d We said, \u201cJust do nothing! Be bored!\u201d And that worked great.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Lenk:<\/strong>\u00a0I still don\u2019t understand how to play Dungeons &amp; Dragons! [<em>Laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Busch:<\/strong>\u00a0One of the writers, Drew Greenberg, said, \u201cLet me show you!\u201d They were very embarrassed for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Espenson:<\/strong>\u00a0Doug Petrie\u2019s writing of the Trio and Drew Z. Greenberg\u2019s writing of the Trio were very much informed by their own set of interests. If you\u2019re going to write about an action figure, you\u2019re not going to research one \u2014 you\u2019re going to write about the one you have on your desk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Greenberg:<\/strong>\u00a0I had written the Boba Fett action figure in the script, and I talked about it being a 1979 mint condition Boba Fett. One of the producers called me and said, \u201cI think we found a problem. Boba Fett wasn\u2019t introduced until\u00a0<em>The Empire Strikes Back<\/em>\u00a0in 1980, so your script is wrong.\u201d And I got to say, \u201cActually, no, the action figure for Boba Fett was introduced\u00a0<em>before<\/em>\u00a0the movie came out, you guys are wrong!\u201d And that was when everyone knew I was a really big nerd. I was really proud of it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As you might expect, there are spoilers at the link.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 5 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on the big screen, <a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/a-gorgeous-behind-the-scenes-look-at-how-alfonso-cuaron-1489262769\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">io9 gets the hat tip<\/a> for this lovely explanation of the effects in\u00a0<em>Gravity<\/em>. \u00a0(Spoilers again).<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QxHc8Ns5g1c\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QxHc8Ns5g1c<\/a>\n<p>I so love anything in the\u00a0<em>The Way Things Work<\/em> genre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 6 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The next link is also\u00a0<em>The Way Things Work<\/em>-y, but may have a little more practical use for you than Mr. Cuar\u00f3n\u2019s. \u00a0The very nerdy bakers at King Arthur Flour have finally explained <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingarthurflour.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/10\/the-a-b-cs-of-cocoa\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">what all the myriad different kinds of cocoa powder do<\/a>. \u00a0With pictures! \u00a0And test baking!<\/p>\n<p>They work through six different kinds of cocoa powder, and use them to make brownies, cake, fudge. \u00a0The contrasts in color and rise for the desserts turned out to be striking. \u00a0And, thankfully, they kept explaining the <em>why<\/em> as they illustrated the <em>what<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/01\/cocoa1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-8668\" title=\"cocoa1\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/84\/2014\/01\/cocoa1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"278\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 130%;\"><a name=\"qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong><a style=\"color: black; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"#qt7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u2014 7 \u2014<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I imaging the King Arthur Flour team had fun finding volunteers to dispose-of-by-consuming their test batches, but enthusiasm for making and experimenting\u00a0<em>can<\/em> sometimes go too far, so the final link is a cautionary tale.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2008, the\u00a0<em>NYT<\/em>\u00a0canvassed bakers and mixed up test batches to develop their recipe for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/07\/09\/dining\/09chip.html?ref=dining\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Best Chocolate Chip Cookies<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0(Enthusiastically endorsed by my family, btw). \u00a0 But\u00a0J. Kenji L\u00f3pez-Alt of Serious Eats <a href=\"http:\/\/sweets.seriouseats.com\/2013\/12\/the-food-lab-the-best-chocolate-chip-cookies.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">may have taken their project a little past its logical conclusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, although his story of fine-tuning cookie recipes is informative and enthusiastic (egg whites, yolks, or both? \u00a0Butter beaten in, melted first, or browned?), it begins to feel like reading through sheets of just-legible notes torn off of a <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/RoomFullOfCrazy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wall of Crazy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is the last batch, I promise,\u201d is what I told my wife about a week ago. Since then I\u2019ve gone through another 10 pounds of flour. Heck, if you want to know the truth, I\u2019ve baked four batches of cookies\u00a0<em>while I was writing this article<\/em>, which means that even as I hit that \u201cpublish\u201d button, this recipe is already obsolete, a work in progress.
